The Pharmacy Clinical Specialist - Oncology coordinates duties/work among pharmacy staff in the cancer center pharmacy, while also working in a clinical role providing pharmaceutical support for the nursing treatment center (NTC) and oncology infusion areas. This position also builds relationships with patients through direct interactions.
The incumbent makes therapeutic recommendations to providers when appropriate regarding patients’ oncology treatment.Monitors and tracks patients’ progress through oncology treatment plans. This includes monitoring labs, cycles and treatment days, checking/calculating doses, and ensuring overall appropriateness of therapy. Builds chemotherapy treatment plans in oncology information system according to policy, obtaining pharmacy and provider reviews. Works with Information Technology Oncology Build Team to add or change treatment plans and to report any issues regarding the Meditech oncology module. Organizes and leads monthly Oncology Medication and Safety Utilization Committee (OMSUC) meetings. This includes but not limited to presenting new oncology drugs to be added to formulary, presenting new treatment plans and changes to existing plans, and presenting new or updated policies and procedures. Participates in monthly P&T meetings to present reports from OMSUC, including formulary requests, new treatment plans added/changed, and new policies and procedures. Manages inventory in the cancer center pharmacy according to the drug budget, monitors CMS drug reimbursement for high cost oncology and NTC drugs, and handles credits for Cardinal E-recovery. Works with clinical coordinator to manage and dispense investigational drugs. Works with Duke Cancer Network team to provide support for billing audits, drug information, and policies and procedures. Interacts directly with patients to educate regarding chemotherapy treatments and side effect management. Manages new process and equipment implementations in the cancer center pharmacy.

This position requires a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree or Bachelor of Science with hospital experience or related PGY1 residency as well as eligibility for Virginia pharmacy licensure. Oncology Pharmacy Board Certification is required within 2 years of hire. Employment experience in clinical practice with communication skills is preferred.
