This ASHP-accredited PGY2 Residency Program is designed to transition PGY1 residency graduates from generalized practice to specialized practice focusing on psychiatric and neuropsychiatric disorders. Our residents provide patient care as a member of a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. The purpose of this program is to equip our residents with the knowledge and skills necessary to establish successful collaborative practices with prescriptive authority, and to practice in diverse healthcare settings. Three psychiatric pharmacists serve as primary preceptors providing the opportunity to learn from psychiatric pharmacists with different but complementary skill sets. Core rotations include outpatient mental health clinics (including primary care/mental health integration, specialty psychiatry, substance use disorders, and rural/TeleMental Health), inpatient psychiatry, liaison psychiatry, neurology, and research. Elective rotations include geriatrics, chronic mental illness (at state-run psychiatric hospital), acute inpatient psychiatry (at community-based hospital), neurology at local neurologic institute, and a research elective (industry-based).
The prospective trainee must have a Doctor of Pharmacy or equivalent educational experience and have completed a PGY1 Residency from an ASHP-accredited program prior to starting the PGY2 residency. An active pharmacy license from one of the 50 states is required. Applicants MUST be US Citizens. The VA Western New York Healthcare System (VAWNYHCS) is a 250 bed Tertiary Care facility affiliated with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo and is located adjacent to the medical complex. VAWNYHCS is affiliated with the SUNY at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and is a training site for doctor of pharmacy and medical students. Our residents provide patient care as members of a multidisciplinary care team of medical professionals.
