Critical Care and Emergency Medicine pharmacists at VMC provide both clinical and distributive services to patients in the Emergency Department and 5 adult ICUs (Medicine, Trauma/Surgery, Neuroscience, Cardiac, and Cardiovascular Surgery). This critical care position provides evening shift coverage across our 5 ICUs throughout the week in a 7 days on/7 days off rotation for critical care and floating position in multiple ICUs and the ED during day shift.
Responsibilities include complete pharmaceutical care including participation on daily rounds and provider hand-offs, participation in medical emergencies, pharmacokinetics, therapeutic drug optimization, prevention of adverse events, cost-effective medication use, critical assessment of all new medication orders, order verification, provision of drug information to physicians and nurses, and education and assessment of learners – medical/pharmacy students and residents. The institution is a level 1 Trauma Center and stroke center. Pharmacists respond to trauma alerts, Code Stroke activations, cardiac arrest events, and Pediatric events.
Career development is supported through a variety of departmental opportunities including scholarship, teaching, and administrative responsibilities. The institution is a Level I trauma center supporting over 100 student months per year for the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy and Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The department supports PGY1 Pharmacy and PGY2 Critical Care Residency Programs.
B.S. or PharmD Degree
NC Licensure prior to start or within 30 days of hire
Basic Life Support Certification Required within 30 days of hire
PGY1 Residency Training required; PGY2 training preferred
