Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is an 886-bed non-profit, acute, quaternary, teaching Level I Trauma Center hospital located in the heart of Los Angeles, California. The Department of Pharmacy has over approximately 400 staff members who provide comprehensive inpatient pharmacy services as well as outpatient services via 2 cancer centers and 3 outpatient pharmacies. The Department of Pharmacy is committed to the education and training of pharmacists, students/interns, residents, technicians, and other health care professionals. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) is affiliated with several Schools of Pharmacy and offers PGY1 and PGY2 residency programs. The residency and student experiential programs at CSMC continue to grow with every successive year, where nearly 170 residents have graduated from the PGY1 pharmacy residency program since 1985 and more than 200 student rotations are offered at CSMC annually. Recently, CSMC was recognized and bestowed “Site of the Year” awards by two major affiliated CA Schools of Pharmacy for providing an exceptional experiential learning environment for their students.
The GI Pharmacist/Nutritional Support Pharmacist (NSP) is responsible for the daily organization and supervision of medication management activities in the GI Clinic area for direct patient care activities related to their nutritional support and supportive therapies for patients with a varity of GI symptomatology and other health issues. The GI Pharmacist/NSP lends support to the attending staff, fellows, residents, and dieticians as well as to the other clinical support staff on the Nutritional Support Team (NST) through consultation, role modeling, education, and research. The NSP provides pharmaceutical care for clinic patients including but not limited to short bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, pancreatic insufficiency, gastrointestinal dysmotility, bariatric surgery, intestinal malabsorption, and celiac disease. The GI Pharmacist/NSP NSP is active in resolving problems associated with the administration of quality patient care as necessary. Additionally, he/she serves as liaison between the NST and other departments, especially the Department of Pharmacy, throughout the medical center as well as other duties assigned. The employee performs job duties with sensitivity to the patients' diverse cultural backgrounds. The employee maintains competency skills to identify medication safety concerns in the age-related population and institutes additional measures to provide a safe environment with consideration to the developmental changes in the patient population. Employee takes initiative to continually educate and maintain clinical and regulatory knowledge.
