The Division of Clinical Pharmacology at the Indiana University School of Medicine offers a two-year postdoctoral fellowship funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or a Pharmacokinetic / Pharmacodynamic Modeling and Simulation Fellowship.
The successful candidate will join a team of faculty and postdoctoral scientists who apply pharmacogenomics and quantitative analyses to improving patient outcomes. Collaborative research with Drug Development and Bioinformatics scientists will provide experience in Clinical Pharmacology, patient-centric clinical research, personalized medicine, and targeted therapies meeting the specific health needs of individual patients. Application of pharmacometric modeling and simulation methodologies, including nonlinear mixed effect modeling, physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling, data mining, machine learning, and quantitative systems pharmacology will enable candidates to develop the critical skills necessary for participation in state-of-the-art clinical research.
The training program involves a series of didactic classes designed to provide basic skills in clinical trial design, pharmacokinetics and pharmacogenetics, biomarker assessment and development, as well as ethical issues in clinical research.
Fellows have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of clinical studies, from the inception and conceptualization of an idea, preparation of the protocol and proposal, the process of getting IRB approval, the actual conduct of the study, to the analysis of data and manuscripts preparation, and publication.
The presence of strong groups of investigators in health services research means that many of our studies can be carried all the way to real world health care outcomes. Research experience in this area can include the use of large clinical databases to perform epidemiologic studies and interventional trials in large populations of patients to address issues of cost effectiveness as applied to drugs.
The personalized medicine clinic and consult service provides opportunities for fellows to see clinical pharmacogenetics and drug-drug interactions in outpatient and inpatient settings.
The rigorous training in translational research provided by no other specialty is designed to prepare fellows for positions in academia, industry and regulatory agencies.
Our interdisciplinary team is looking for a motivated, ambitious, and creative individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills. The successful candidate must possess a MD, MD/PhD, PharmD or equivalent. T32 fellows are supported by our NIH grant and must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

The clinical research focus of the Clinical Pharmacology division is on genetics and non-genetic mechanisms of inter-individual variability in drug effects, and encompass a broad range of areas, including cardiology, nephrology, obstetrics, reproductive endocrinology, hematology/oncology, medical oncology, GI/hepatology and infectious disease.
