The PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency Program at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy/Medication Management Center is a 12-month program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The program was established in 2012.
A pharmacist completing the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency Program will be well-prepared for the role of an ambulatory care specialist, a clinical coordinator and/or an adjunct faculty member in an area of ambulatory care pharmacy, and specifically to be prepared to develop new financially sustainable ambulatory care services in one of these roles. Upon successful completion of the residency program, a certificate will be awarded to the resident by the College

About the Program:
With its primary residency training site at the University of Arizona Medication Management Center, the program partners with a local integrated behavioral health clinic, Tucson Medical Center, and Banner-University Medicine to provide residents with experience in a wide variety of ambulatory settings with a wide variety of methods of service delivery, electronic health record components, and reimbursement models. As a key feature of the program, the strategic partnership with SinfoniaRx allows residents to synthesize information they have gathered at the patient practice sites about delivery and sustainability of programs and apply it to development of a new clinical service.

All core learning experiences are longitudinal
The resident will participate in safe, evidence-based, compassionate, and cost-effective patient care. All patient care activities are under the supervision of attending pharmacists and commensurate with the resident’s level of training as determined by the residency program. The resident will communicate effectively with supervising attending pharmacists regarding his/her patient evaluation, interpretation of diagnostic tests, and plan of care and intended therapeutic interventions. Additionally, the resident will provide oral and written consultations focused on improving patient outcomes and enhancing communication with the health care team.
The resident is required to participate in didactic, experiential, and co-curricular education of pharmacy and other health professions’ students and residents. The resident may elect to participate in the longitudinal Teaching Certificate (PRSTL) Program.
The resident is also responsible for the development, implementation, and completion of a research project. The objective is to develop the resident's skills in problem identification, investigation, and solution. Each resident will be paired with a PhD student in the Health Outcomes and PharmacoEconomics (HOPE) Center for research mentorship. Resident projects will affect patient care service outcomes, delivery or operations. The results will be presented at the Southwestern States Residency Conference and the APhA Annual Meeting. The resident will complete the manuscript and work with the research team to submit for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
The resident will write and implement a business plan for a new financially sustainable clinical pharmacy service under the tutelage of prominent faculty in the area of pharmacy innovation.
Weekend Staffing/On-call Responsibilities:
The resident is required to staff one Saturday every calendar month. Weekend staffing shifts consist of evaluating patients, triaging problems and precepting pharmacy interns during the provision of care at the Medication Management Center.
Benefits and Financial Provisions:
The salary for this program is competitive with similar residency programs nationwide. The resident is entitled to all benefits provided to full time University of Arizona appointed personnel. Funds may be provided to help offset travel expenses to selected state and national meetings
