Overview: This program combines a 12-month PGY1 pharmacy practice residency followed by a 12-month PGY2 residency in health-system administration. In year one, the resident participates in all of the requirements of Tufts MC’s PGY1 program (see the residency website at: www.tuftsmedicalcenter.org/patient-care-services/Departments-and-Services/Pharmacy/Pharmacy-Residency-ProgramIn year two, this resident will build on the PGY1 residency experience and more directly engage in pharmacy practice management and practice advancement initiatives within our health-system. The program provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care, pharmacy administration and leadership.
Description: Pharmacists at Tufts Medical Center are responsible for dedicated clinical practices, drug distribution, teaching and research in both acute and ambulatory settings. The Department of Pharmacy is renowned for combining clinical, operational, financial, regulatory management into a cohesive whole and for involving every member of the staff in administering the programs of the department. The resident will develop competence in caring for inpatients and outpatients, and in managing people and processes. The PGY2 resident will rotate through core experiences and have the opportunity to select 2 elective experiences.

In addition to core learning experience, residents participate in a number of longitudinal activities including hospital pharmacy practice (staffing component), serving as administrator on-call, participating in several hospital-wide committees, serving as Chief Resident for the PGY1 program and participating in the ASHP Pharmacy Leadership Academy. The resident is also responsible for completing a longitudinal project.
Tufts Medical Center has provided an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency for more than 40 years. The PGY2 pharmacy residency in health-system administration is in its first year and is actively pursuing accreditation by ASHP.
Outcomes: The resident is prepared for a managerial role in health-system pharmacy practice that integrates direct patient care, drug distribution, teaching and practice management. The resident will be able to design, improve and manage a safe and effective medication use system. The purpose of the program is achieved by utilizing the four competency areas and their associated educational goals and objectives as required by the ASHP Standard. Competency areas are:

Salary and Benefits: The residency stipend is competitive with those offered in similar programs. Residents are eligible for the hospital’s benefits package, including health insurance and paid time off (vacation, sick, and personal). The department also provides financial assistance to partially offset the cost of travel to national, regional and local professional conferences.
Application Requirements: The applicant must be a graduate of an accredited school or college of pharmacy and be licensed or eligible for licensure in Massachusetts. Curriculum vitae, transcripts, personal statement / letter of intent and three letters of recommendation are necessary to be considered for an on-site interview.
