PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY-1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in advanced or specialized practice. PGY-2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY-2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in the specialized practice area (when board certification for the practice area exists).
Graduates of the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency will be empowered to treat and appropriately triage a wide range of critically ill patients. Emphasis is placed on the provision of bedside care with graduates being well equipped to function as an integrated member of the interdisciplinary critical care team. In addition, the resident will acquire the experiences necessary to exercise leadership in critical care pharmacy practice at a local and health-care system level and provide experiential and didactic education to a variety of healthcare professionals and those training to be healthcare professionals.
Inova Fairfax Medical Campus (IFMC) offers a pre-accreditation status PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program that uniquely combines the academic rigor of a university based hospital, the complexities of critical care subspecialty, and the family atmosphere of a community program. IFMCs PGY-2 critical care pharmacy program builds on the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY-1 pharmacy residency program in order to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacy specialists in critical care. The residency program will also provide teaching opportunities that will develop pedagogical skills in the context of adjunct faculty appointment with affiliated pharmacy schools. A well-rounded critical care experience is provided with experiences in neuroscience, trauma, medical, cardiac, cardiovascular surgery, and pediatric intensive care units.
Applicants for the PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency program must meet the following eligibility requirements:
Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy
Successful completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency program
