St. Louis College of Pharmacy invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of dean of the School of Pharmacy.
Founded in 1864, as the first college of pharmacy west of the Mississippi River, St. Louis College of Pharmacy is the third-oldest and eighth-largest college of pharmacy in America. Since its founding, the College has educated entrepreneurs, clinical practitioners and specialists, hospital administrators, biomedical researchers, corporate executives, deans, national pharmacy association leaders, and many more experts in leading-edge areas across health care. For more than 150 years, the College has been preparing students for expert practice and leadership in pharmacy and health professions careers.
The College admits students directly from high school into undergraduate programs and accepts transfer students and graduates from other colleges and universities into the first professional year of the program. More than 1000 students are currently enrolled from 30 states and 24 countries. There are approximately 350 undergraduate students and 710 professional students enrolled at the College. The College currently has the 8th largest number of student pharmacists among US colleges/schools of pharmacy in Fall 2018. Exceptional first-year students come to the College with an average composite ACT score of 26 and an average high school GPA of 3.68. Approximately 55% of our students are residents of Missouri and 30% from Illinois. Thirty-six percent of students are ethnic minorities.
Opportunities and Expectations for the Dean of the School of Pharmacy
Reporting to the president of the College, the dean of the School of Pharmacy provides strategic vision and operational leadership for 66 full-time and 24 part-time faculty organized into two departments: pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical & administrative sciences. The dean advances scholarship, education, and civic engagement, promoting initiatives within and outside of the School of Pharmacy. The dean is responsible for the Doctor of Pharmacy program, which includes over preceptor 700 sites, professional student affairs, and faculty development. In addition, the dean of pharmacy works closely with the dean of arts and sciences as well as academic services departments on the development, assessment, and improvement of all academic programs, including the new M.S. programs in global health and medicinal chemistry that are pending accreditation. The dean will ensure that the activities conducted by the school are relevant to the mission and vision of the College and are responsive to the needs of St. Louis, the Midwest, the nation, and the world and meet accreditation requirements of the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. As a member of the President's Staff, the dean will work collaboratively with the president and other senior executives to promote the profession of pharmacy and the strengths and opportunities of the College to a wide variety of internal and external audiences.
Minimum Requirements
The successful candidate will be an inspirational leader who possesses demonstrated leadership in education, research or practice, and substantial administrative experience, strong scholarly visibility within the academic community, and the capacity to exercise intellectual leadership at the local, state, national, and international levels. The candidate will enable and inspire faculty, staff, preceptors, and students toward achievement of the College's mission and goals.
Minimum requirements:
a Pharm.D. or Ph.D. or equivalent professional degree;
distinguished leadership experience with substantial administrative experience and a record of scholarly achievement in teaching or research and/or accomplishments in practice;
a demonstrated strong commitment to pharmacy education, the importance of pharmacy in health care delivery, service and outreach to promote pharmacy, wellness and improving health outcomes for patients, particularly those populations that are medically underserved;
a record of advancing diversity;
proven success or aptitude for relating positively with students, faculty, pharmacy practitioners, alumni, pharmaceutical industry representatives, pharmacy association leaders, the business community, and state and local government officials;
ability to build and sustain strong teaching and research relations with educational and research partners, promote interests for pharmacy practice, and develop funding for research and academic programs;
the ability to provide a vision for pharmacy and ensure that the College's academic and research programs are positioned to overcome challenges and meet that vision;
the ability to lead, support, develop, and recruit a distinguished, accomplished, and diverse faculty of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists;
the ability to manage budgets, projects, and allocated resources and prioritize to ensure goals are met;
exceptional social and interpersonal skills and written and oral communication skills; and
credentials that merit appointment at the rank of full professor.
