Methodist University Hospital offers a new postgraduate year two (PGY-2) residency in Emergency Medicine (EM) Pharmacy Practice. The purpose of the program is to provide the resident with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to achieve potential excellence as a clinician, educator and scholar in the area of emergency medicine. Our institution is home to a brand new 56 bed Emergency Department that sees approximately 65,000 patients per year. In addition, our institution has a 24-bed medical intensive care unit (ICU), an 8-bed surgical ICU, an 8-bed transplant ICU, a 16-bed neurocritical care unit, and a 16-bed cardiac surgery ICU. Residents have the opportunity to complete a rotation in trauma ICU at an off-site institution in downtown Memphis. Residents are expected to perform Independently and demonstrate proficiency in their rotations. The residency preceptor provides guidance and assistance to the resident and ensures that the goals set forth by the resident and the program is met.
Since 1964, MLH has offered a pharmacy residency program and is now comprised of a multi-site PGY1 and 6 PGY-2 training programs. Our residencies are primarily located at University Hospital, a community academic medical center affiliated with the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center (UTHSC). PGY1 residents also train at Germantown hospital, an acute care community medical center located 30 minutes from downtown Memphis. Our programs provide residents with the knowledge and skills required to become competent clinical pharmacy practitioners capable of providing pharmaceutical care in a variety of practice settings. In addition, residents are expected to complete a major project relating to pharmacy practice in their area of interest, provide education to patients, pharmacy students and other health professionals in a variety of formal and informal settings, serve on various institutional committees, and participate in departmental projects. Residents from all pharmacy residency programs also participate in interactive learning sessions with preceptors, including the longitudinal pharmacy resident conference and research development series. Both our internal medicine and solid organ transplant residencies are directly affiliated with UTHSC. All residents have the opportunity to participate in the UTHSC Teaching and Learning Program and complete didactic lectures within the college of pharmacy.
