Position Summary: As a member of the pharmacy leadership team, this supervisor is expected to direct development, implementation, and maintenance of clinical pharmacy services for the Health System. This includes but is not limited to:
Ensuring that the pharmacy provides optimal clinical services on a daily basis through adequate staffing and training.
Supervises and instructs pharmacists performing clinical roles.
Fills in as a clinical staff Pharmacist, fulfilling those respective job duties, when staffing levels dictate to maintain continuity of programs and service levels
In collaboration with the Director of Pharmacy:
Coordinates the pharmacy's pharmacoeconomic efforts (VAT development and maintenance, adherence to non-formulary policy, cost modeling, and other initiatives as appropriate),
Develop and oversee the implementation of clinical action plans to capture identified cost-savings.
Coordinates Drug Utilization Reviews, Adverse Drug Reaction reporting, clinical intervention documentation, and other quality assurance programs in accordance with regulatory guidelines and Health System needs.
Establish policies, procedures and protocols that ensure safe, appropriate, cost-effective medication therapies for patient populations.
Develop, promote, maintain, and evaluate patient care services to achieve appropriate care standards, quality improvement and cost savings in concert with corporate initiatives and contract compliance.
Facilitates the identification, resolution, implementation, and communication of cost-effective medication use issues in collaboration with the medical staff.
Formulary Management/Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
Coordinates System wide formulary management.
Oversight of the development and implementation of new clinical practices, treatment guidelines, protocols, formulary changes, critical pathways and policies related to drug therapy.
Coordinates all aspects of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
Plans and coordinates preparation of drug reviews, DUE criteria, antibiotic sensitivity data, adverse drug reaction reports, medication errors, pharmacy interventions summary, and other projects
Produces meeting minutes and other written summaries of P&T business for distribution to appropriate healthcare professionals.
Review all non-formulary requests.
Education, Staff and Student Development
Coordinates education and training programs designed to more fully develop the clinical skills of pharmacy staff to advance pharmacy initiatives.
Facilitate System wide clinical staff meetings.
Participates in education and training of other healthcare providers as requested.
Acts as a liaison between the Pharmacy Department and colleges of pharmacy to coordinate student development.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Carry out performance evaluations of assigned staff.
Serves on various hospital committees as assigned by the Director.
Serves as a resource person to staff, Physicians, Administration, and other hospital personnel.
Assists other pharmacists in resolving special clinical problems.
Serves as a liaison between the Department of Pharmacy Services and other departments.
Maintains high visibility among medical and nursing staff.
Updates physicians and other health professionals of drug shortages that impact hospital practice patterns.
Serve as a department administrator on call.
Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
Education: Graduate of an accredited A.C.P.E. College of Pharmacy. Completion of ASHP accredited clinical residency or equivalent clinical experience.
Experience: At least three years of hospital clinical supervisorial experience (supervision of clinical pharmacists). For-profit or not-for-profit multi-hospital system experience preferred (experience with managing clinical services given productivity constraints).
Licensure/Certification: Licensed by the Board of Pharmacy to practice the profession of Pharmacy in South Carolina. Board Certification by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties preferred.
