ABOUT USA HEALTH & THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA:
USA Health serves as the major referral center for residents in southwest Alabama, southeast Mississippi, and portions of northwest Florida. Beginning with the founding of the USA College of Medicine in 1973, USA Health is the only academic medical center along the upper Gulf Coast and is recognized as the go-to healthcare system for the region’s toughest emergencies.
USA Health’s academic partner is The University of South Alabama (USA), a public, national research university located in Mobile with over 14,000 students and more than 100 academic programs. Since its founding in 1963, USA has awarded more than 82,000 degrees.
THE LOCALE: MOBILE, ALABAMA
Known for its streets lined with massive live oaks, Mobile is located at the mouth of the Mobile River at Mobile Bay, leading to the Gulf of Mexico. This laid-back waterfront metropolitan area is one of the Gulf Coast’s biggest cultural and economic centers with more than 600,000 residents. Just 30 minutes from picturesque sandy-white beaches, residents enjoy a diverse offering of year-round community and cultural events and outdoor adventures that appeal to every member of the family.
Downtown Mobile is beginning to boom with the addition of condos and lofts, and there are ambitious plans for opening up access to the Mobile River waterfront. While the city may be a vibrant and growing metro area, its cost of living falls well below national averages, with housing being particularly inexpensive. Newcomers have the choice of living in restored, historic downtown neighborhoods or in the Eastern Shore communities of Daphne, Fairhope, and Spanish Fort that offer tremendous suburban quality of life while still just a short distance from downtown Mobile.
