Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is the world's oldest and largest private institution devoted to the prevention, treatment, and cure of cancer. We have dedicated more than a century to patient care and innovative research. The Pharmacy Department at Memorial Sloan Kettering recognizes the value and need for an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited Post-Graduate Year 2 (PGY2) residency program for pharmacists seeking a career in adult oncology practice.
The MSK PGY2 pharmacy residency training builds on the foundations of pharmacy practice established during Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and the PGY1 pharmacy residency experience. The MSK PGY2 Oncology Residency provides residents with a 12 month learning experience that prepares them to function independently as a clinical pharmacy practitioner in oncology, to serve as a fully integrated member of a multi-disciplinary team, and to optimize medications used in the provision of cancer care. Residents who successfully complete a PGY2 oncology pharmacy residency at MSK will possess competencies that prepare them for future clinical, research or academic positions, leadership roles in oncology, and board certification in oncology pharmacy.
The adult oncology specialty residency provides advanced training in clinical therapeutics for the adult cancer patient. The main objectives of this comprehensive one-year residency program are to:
Establish a firm knowledge-base regarding adult malignancies, treatment options, and antineoplastic pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics
Develop and build the knowledge and clinical skills required to practice as an independent oncology pharmacy practitioner
Foster development of critical thinking and literature evaluation skills
provide an introduction to clinical research
Rotations include, but are not limited to, Medical Oncology, Hematologic Malignancies, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Pain and Palliative Care, Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases, Early Drug Development Clinic, and Investigational Drug Management. Residents will also develop skills for continuous professional development through the required completion of a clinical research project, a variety of presentations, journal clubs, and other educational offerings. The residency program is supported by board certified preceptors, pharmacy staff and administration.
