The PGY2 Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacy Residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital is part of a residency program that has trained pharmacists and pharmacy leaders for more than 40 years. Riverside is a 1,080 bed non-profit, tertiary care, teaching hospital that serves as the flagship of the 11 hospital OhioHealth system. Riverside is the largest acute care hospital in Ohio and is consistently ranked as a leader in the areas of Neuroscience, Heart and Vascular care, Cancer care, Maternity and Women’s Health, Trauma, and Orthopedics.
The purpose of the 12-month program is to equip a pharmacist to practice independently as a specialist in pain and palliative care. In addition to clinical development, the pharmacist should be prepared to participate in research and education specific to pain and palliative care. Core rotations will focus on acute and chronic pain management, palliative care, hospice, substance use disorder and leadership. Additional electives are available to customize the residency. Rotations occur primarily at Riverside and also include experiences at the inpatient hospice house, a sister-hospital and the health-system level. This structure offers a unique learning environment for the resident interested in pain management and palliative care. A teaching certificate can be pursued through a collaboration with The Ohio State University, but is not required.
