Please email each RPD directly. Critical Care (PGY2) This residency is an ASHP-accredited specialty program designed to train pharmacists to care for the critical care patient. Training will be focused in both general and specific intensive care units such as: the medical intensive care unit (ICU), neurosciences ICU, cardiovascular/cardiothoracic ICU, surgical/trauma ICU, burnhttps://muschealth.org/patients-visitors/about-us/residencies-and-fellowships/pharmacy ICU, and medical-surgical ICU, as well as offering a mandatory transplant and emergency medicine experience. The program offers a wide variety of critical care rotations allowing sufficient flexibility to adapt to the individual needs of the resident, while ensuring all of the ASHP standards for critical care residency training are met. Elective rotations in antimicrobial stewardship, infectious diseases consult, heart/lung transplant, and in various pediatric ICUs are also available. The strength of the program lies in both the practice model at the Medical University of South Carolina and preceptors with their experienced backgrounds, preparing the resident to excel in the various positions ranging from clinical specialists in critical care, to critical care faculty members, to general critical care pharmacist practitioners. Mentored and independent learning are combined to provide opportunities for the PGY-2 resident to build upon skills learned from a PGY-1 program. Strengths of this program include a diverse group of preceptors and a well-integrated nature of pharmacy presence within the Emergency Department. In addition to adult and pediatric emergency medicine experience, the resident will also have training in critical care, prehospital care, toxicology, and other areas of the resident’s choice. There are ample opportunities to participate in and provide education to the Department of Pharmacy Services and the Department of Emergency Medicine. The PGY-2 Resident has opportunities to participate in the 24-hour adult in-house on-call service; present at Emergency Medicine Conference, Critical Care Lecture Series, and provide an ACPE-accredited seminar; design and lead research project(s); and precept PharmD candidate students and pharmacy residents. The program allows sufficient flexibility to adapt to the individual needs of the resident, while ensuring that all ASHP standards for specialized residency training in solid organ transplant pharmacy are met. Upon completion of this program, the resident should possess the skills needed to excel as a clinical specialist in Solid Organ Transplant Pharmacy and attain board certification (i.e. BCPS or the soon to be available BCTXP). The PGY2 year includes monthly inpatient and outpatient rotations in solid organ transplant and a longitudinal outpatient experience with the MUSC specialty pharmacy caring for hepatitis C positive organ transplant recipients. Notable learning opportunities include rotations in abdominal transplant, cardiothoracic transplant, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiac intensive care, medical intensive care, transplant quality and compliance, infectious diseases, pediatric transplant, and outpatient transplant clinics.
