The University of Southern California (USC) School of Pharmacy is seeking candidates for a new Clinician-Educator track faculty position in psychiatry at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The selected candidate will develop and maintain an acute care psychiatry clinical pharmacy service and teaching site, supporting student clinical education and the existing ASHP accredited PGY2 psychiatric pharmacy residency of the USC School of Pharmacy. The practice site is currently in collaboration with the Los Angeles County (LAC) Department of Health Services and the Los Angeles County+ USC Inpatient Psychiatry service, with locations at the LAC+USC Medical Center, the Augustus F. Hawkins Mental Health Center on the Martin Luther King Medical Center campus in South Los Angeles. LAC+USC inpatient psychiatry service is the main training entity for the USC School of Medicine’s psychiatry residency, and other health provider teaching programs (i.e., occupational therapy, recreational therapy, psychology, and nursing). Alternative practice sites may also be considered.
The successful candidate will be appointed as Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinician Educator Track), with the specific rank will be determined based on academic experience and demonstrated success. The faculty member will devote 80% of time to clinical teaching/mentoring (including preceptorship of pharmacy students and residents) and patient care activities with 20% of time devoted to scholarly activities and University service. Classroom teaching opportunities will be in accordance with overall goals of the curriculum and with the faculty candidate’s area of expertise in mind. Annual merit salary increases and eligibility for promotion presumes the expectation for the Clinician-Educator faculty member to be outstanding in both teaching and patient care performance. Scholarly activities and university service are important contributions for the well-rounded faculty candidate’s recruitment and success. This faculty position does not lead to consideration for tenure.
Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated strong background in patient care and teaching in acute care psychiatric settings. Additional training or experience in pediatric psychiatry is advantageous. Excellent communication skills, teaching skills, leadership experience, and a record of scholarship and innovation are desired. Applicants must have a PharmD degree, and California licensure (or eligibility for licensure with passing the State Board exam at the first available sitting). Completion of an ASHP accredited residency (PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency) is required and PGY2 Residency in Psychiatric Pharmacy and Board Certification Psychiatric Pharmacy is preferred.
