This Chief Pharmacist position is located at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital in Hines, IL and is part of the VA's Great Lakes Health Care System in the Veteran's Integrated Service Network (VISN 12). The incumbent is fully responsible for the daily professional and administrative operation of all pharmacy programs of this highly diverse teaching hospital. Major programs of the hospital supported by Pharmacy Service include acute medicine, surgery, intensive care, spinal cord injury, and an extensive hospital-based primary care program. Major Duties: Develops and maintains effective clinical pharmacy program that optimizes patient outcomes at the lowest possible cost. Provides a comprehensive, ongoing quality management plan for monitoring pharmacy programs that enables opportunities for improvement to be identified. Implements improvements in programs to maximize therapeutic benefit and minimize patient risk. Overall responsibility for the Pharmacy Service's contribution to the clinical investigation of new drugs and therapeutic agents. Provides the environment, resources and motivation for the participation of pharmacy personnel in providing drug information to hospital staff and other local VA facilities, Facilitates patient and staff drug education programs. Has full and final technical, professional and administrative responsibility for planning, developing, coordinating, directing and evaluating an integrated pharmacy program that provides a comprehensive array of pharmacy services at this affiliated teaching and research hospital. Prepares projections and justifications for operating and personnel budgets, equipment needs, space needs and security requirements for Pharmacy Service in consonance with the continuously expanding role of the service. Establishes and implements strategic and tactical plans for the service based upon anticipated patient needs, changing patient demographics and changes in the external environment. Continuously revises organizational structure of the service and devises new programs and. methodologies designed to improve patient care outcomes .in a dynamic, ever-changing environment. Establishes the structure, performance standards, reporting requirements and controls essential to carrying out the mission of the service. Formulates and implements effective polices and procedures to assure that patients and patient care locations received medications, medical/surgical supplies and equipment in a timely manner and to assure compliance of the hospital with all legal, regulatory body and agency requirements relative to drug distribution. Prepares reports of pharmacy activities, cost allocations, and other documents as required. Implements the pharmaceutical care concept and ensures a continuum of care for all patients as they move between the various health care setting available to them at Hines hospital and VISN 12.
