Work Hours/Shift: On Call/ PRN (20 hours/ month with a minimum of every 3rd weekend requirement))
You Will Be Responsible For:

Develops and maintains the skills necessary to be functional as a pharmacy technician in all areas of the pharmacy. Actively performs all pharmacy technician functions and maintains active proficiency in operational programs, dispensing and compounding activities, hospital computer systems and medication systems, and established standard work parameters. Maintains operational proficiency in and provides periodic coverage of all operational areas including the central pharmacy, satellite pharmacy areas, and decentralized roles (as appropriate per campus).
Consistently assists pharmacists in all pharmacy and patient care functions as needed. Accurately responds to medication dispensing requests, prepares medications for pharmacist review/check, delivers checked medications to nursing units in a timely manner, and returns unused or expired medications to appropriate pharmacy areas. Always obtains pharmacists’ verification before distribution of any medication.
Answers incoming telephone calls and responds to customer requests to ensure accurate and timely resolution of customer needs and representation of the department in a positive manner. Contacts patient care areas regarding unclear, expensive, short dated or problem medication orders. Works effectively with all members of the healthcare team to ensure the best outcome for the patient. Prioritizes activities to ensure the delivery of accurate, safe, timely, and appropriate medication availability based on patient needs.
Performs all clerical and specialized technician duties related to front reception area and responds to external customer requests accurately and in a timely manner. Follows correct procedure for filling, recording and distributing pharmacy trays and interdepartmental product transfer requests.
Adheres to policy and procedures concerning responsibilities/functions of the technician in keeping pharmacy areas stocked, clean, neat and well organized. Accurately manages medication inventories in pharmacy areas including central and satellite pharmacies and in-patient care areas including nursing units and procedure areas. Maintains appropriate stock levels of medications and accurately turns medication inventory (first in, first out). Pre-packs oral solid/liquid medication into unit-dose packaging in accordance with procedures and guidelines. Accurately maintains operational functionality of automated dispensing cabinets (e.g. Pyxis Med Stations) by accurately restocking ADCs, conducting medication inventory reviews, and loading/unloading medications as directed.
What You Will Need:
Active enrollment in an intern program at a school or college of pharmacy
Current, valid State of Florida Pharmacist Intern license
Verbal communication, organizational, problem-solving, and customer service skills
Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers, and external customers
Ability to follow direction from formal management personnel and informal supervisors (pharmacists) and at times, to work well without direct supervision
Ability to keep accurate and complete records
Knowledge and competence in aseptic techniques and chemotherapy product preparation, including hazardous product handling
Expertise in general hospital pharmacy operations (including medication dispensing and IV compounding) and hospital regulatory compliance
Expertise with hospital computer systems, pharmacy technology, and pharmacy automation
Expertise in USP 797 guidelines
Expertise using Cerner pharmacy solutions and services
Expertise using Pyxis automated dispensing technology
Contemporary hospital pharmacy experience
Practice experience in a large hospital (greater than 500 bed institution) and integrated healthcare system (three or more hospitals in system)
Primary responsibility is the provision of medication distributive functions and pharmacy operational tasks, which includes but is not limited to assisting the pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medications, inventory management, and regulatory compliance. Advanced responsibilities include patient care interactions allowed according to Florida Pharmacy Intern licensure under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Performs duties necessary for the effective daily operation of all department services and programs. Accurately responds to medication dispensing requests, prepares medications (including compounding of sterile products) for pharmacist review/check, delivers checked medications to nursing units, and returns unused or expired medications to appropriate pharmacy areas. Accurately maintains operational functionality of and medication stock within automated dispensing cabinets (e.g. Pyxis Med Stations). The term of the internship is a maximum of six years. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
