University Health (UH), in affiliation with The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, is pleased to offer an ASHP-Accredited Postgraduate Year 2 (PGY2) Critical Care Pharmacy Residency. This 12-month residency is designed to provide a challenging training environment for individuals interested in developing clinical competency in the area of critical care.
As full-time employees of UH, residents receive a competitive annual stipend of $57,000 plus excellent employee benefits.
University Hospital, the health system’s flagship institution, operates 690 acute care and specialty beds, and is the premier teaching hospital for San Antonio and South Texas offering a higher level of coordinated care for routine medical care to the most complex diseases, disorders and injuries. UH is the first health system in San Antonio and South Texas to earn Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, which is widely accepted as the “gold standard” in measuring the quality of care that healthcare consumers can expect to receive. University Hospital is home to the premier Level 1 Trauma Center for adult care and the only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in South Texas, serving a 22-county region. There are 96 adult ICU beds, 30 pediatric and 58 neonatal ICU beds at University Hospital where provision of care is accomplished by attending physicians, intensivists, residents, acute-care mid-level practitioners, clinical pharmacists and other critical care personnel. The trauma research program focuses on identifying new and innovative ways to improve the care, management and treatment of trauma and critically ill patients. In addition, University Hospital is certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association – the highest level of certification available.
The PGY2 critical care pharmacy resident will receive advanced clinical training in surgical/trauma ICU, neuroscience ICU, medicine ICU, emergency medicine, and cardiology. Clinical responsibilities include critical care patient monitoring and daily multi-disciplinary rounds. Electives may be chosen from a variety of areas, including but not limited to cardiothoracic surgery, infectious diseases, solid organ transplant, palliative medicine, pediatric/neonatal ICU, and neurology/stroke. Residents will attend regularly scheduled meetings with preceptor to discuss patients.
Research responsibilities include completion of an individual major research project with presentation of results. Publication of results is highly encouraged. Residents also participate in critical care-related issues of the DUE and P&T Committees and conduct a critical care- related DUE. In addition, residents provide clinical staffing for the adult critical care areas and respond to all “code blue” alerts throughout the hospital. Academic responsibilities include pharmacy student precepting and lecture, case presentations, weekly critical care discussion/journal club, attendance and presentation at pharmacotherapy rounds and pharmacotherapy seminar. Additionally, residents will have opportunities to evaluate their self- growth throughout residency.
Residents in The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy Affiliated Programs are eligible for appointment as an Instructor in Clinical Pharmacy with the College of Pharmacy. There are also opportunities for participation in Resident Rounds, the Teaching and Leadership Fellows Program, teaching in labs and precepting clerkship students.
In order to be considered for this residency, the applicant must:
Possess a strong interest in emergency medicine clinical pharmacy practice
Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Complete an ACPE-accredited PharmD Degree program
Be enrolled in or complete an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency
Participate in the ASHP Resident Matching Program
Once accepted into the residency program, candidates should submit a completed Job Application by May 1 and obtain a Registered Pharmacist License in the state of Texas by August 1.
