The Pharmacy Technician (Outpatient) is primarily responsible for management of filling and coordinating distributive and administrative tasks primarily located in the Outpatient Pharmacy Clinic, at the Kansas City VA Medical Center. Secondary responsibilities include management of incoming pharmacy phone calls and prescriptions requests. This announcement is open to All US Citizens. Education or Experience. Candidates must possess a high school diploma, or equivalent; OR at least three (3) months experience. Candidates must be certified by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required for this position. (Must be submitted with application. Pharmacy Technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Chapter 2, Section D, paragraph 5a. Preferred Experience: Outpatient experience as a Pharmacy Technician Grade Determinations: GS-06 Level: Candidate must have one year specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-5) directly related to the position being filled, that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as a Pharmacy Technician. Examples of qualifying experience include: The technician will have experience filling medications and medical supply prescriptions, and administrative tasks -AND- must fully meet the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities as determined from your supporting documents: 1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate actions. 2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. 3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. 4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. 5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. 6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. References: VA Handbook 5005/15, Part II, Appendix G28 Pharmacy Technician Qualification Standard Physical Requirements: The work is primarily performed while sitting, though some work may require periods of standing. The regular and recurring work of this position involves sitting at a desk, conferences, meetings, etc. Frequent use of automobile and public conveyances may be required. Occasional lifting of boxes is also required. ["Primary Functions: Participates in filling medication and medical supply prescriptions for mail out and/or pick up. Reviews orders for completeness and fills order accurately, selecting drug products prescribed by their trade or generic name; assembles completed orders for pharmacist review and check. Fills orders independently which involves counting, prepackaging, reconstitution, measuring and selecting required medication items or components, and labeling with prescription and appropriate auxiliary labels. Takes appropriate action to notify procurement staff as well as pharmacist or patient if the ordered item is not immediately available in the requested amount or strength. Maintains Scriptpro for maximum utilization of automated systems through maintenance, appropriate robot usage, inventory management, etc. Fills controlled substances (class II-V) prescriptions for refill, mail out and window patients, in the absence of the controlled substance technician. Secondary Functions: Receives telephone calls and answers patient inquiries related to process questions. Refers clinical and other judgmental questions to the supervising pharmacist or designee. Documents patient interaction in electronic medical record, as appropriate. Relays information related to medication recalls, shortages and substitutions by contacting patients and/or mailing notifications as directed by pharmacists. Assists supervisor to detect problems with automated refill system. Notifies supervisor immediately of potential or actual system issues. Assists patients with refill requests on medications that are out of refills by collecting prescription information and completing refill request process.
