Under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, performs a variety of tasks to assist in the operation of the Ventura County Medical Center Inpatient, Outpatient or Infusion Pharmacy.
NEW HIRE/RETENTION/REFERRAL INCENTIVES Subject to the applicable section of the SEIU 721 MOA 2019-2022, Amendment #6 (Secs. 3801 – 3803):
In compliance with specific requirements, effective 10/12/2022 a regular employee may be eligible for an Employee Referral Incentive of $500.
This class differs from Pharmacy Technician I in that the incumbents perform a broad range of more complex technical duties related to packaging, manipulative, repetitive, or other nondiscretionary tasks related to the processing or a prescription.
APPROXIMATE SALARIES: Pharmacy Technician II: $21.23 - $26.96 hourly (this includes base pay and MBPP)
Effective 11/16/21, a market-based premium pay (MBPP) for Regular Pharmacy Technician incumbents will be applied as follows: Pharmacy Technician II: $6.23/hour
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive. This incentive may be 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% for incumbents in eligible positions based on completion of an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree that is not required for the classification.
BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency exam.

Pharmacy Technician II is represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Operates a computer to complete tasks related to prescription filling, stocking, inventory, and billing;
Assists in the maintenance of other pharmacy records;
Requisitions necessary supplies for daily operations;
Assists in the compounding, preparation, and dispensing of medications, solutions, and supplies where appropriate;
Counts and repackages medications including use of unit-dose medication distribution system;
Assists the pharmacist staff in the completion of Joint Commission unit inspections;
Restocks and maintains stock and receives, unpacks, and locates incoming medications and other supplies;
Fills/refills medications and floor stock in automated dispensing cabinets;
Assists in the admixture of parenteral solutions, including:
I.V. piggyback medications (IVPB)
Large volume parenteral solutions (LVP)
Parenteral nutrition solutions (PN)
Specialty solutions (critical care medications)
Interviews patients to obtain medication histories;
Maintains general neatness and cleanliness of the pharmacy;
Compounds and prepares medications and solutions and distributes supplies;
Assists in the unit-dose medication distribution system;
Answers and triage phone calls;
Delivers medication for patient use to respective nursing units;
Reviews controlled substance utilization for nursing, anesthesiologist and pharmacy staff;
Communicates to nurses, clinical nurse managers, anesthesiologist, pharmacy staff regarding any findings from controlled substance review either verbally or via email in a professional manner;
Creates report of summary from controlled substance review;
Assists in auditing of 340B transactions for compliance to the program;
Creates report of summary from 340B audits; and
Performs other related duties as required.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%: A job-related written examination will be administered to test candidates' knowledge of generic drug names, pharmacy calculations, pharmacy procedures, conversions, filing, and interpersonal relationships. Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.
Applicants successfully completing the exam process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education, training and experience comparable to one (1) year experience in an inpatient pharmacy with knowledge of pharmacy procedures and practices.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Must possess and maintain a current California Pharmacy Technician Registration/License.
Experience in controlled substance surveillance and/or 340B compliance.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS This position may be subject to State Health Officer Orders regarding vaccine verification and/or testing. These requirements are a condition of employment. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of: basic pharmacy practices and procedures; inpatient, outpatient and/or infusion pharmacy practices and procedures; general clerical and recordkeeping procedures; operate basic Microsoft software products with emphasis in Excel. state and federal laws surrounding controlled substance surveillance, and basic understanding of the 340B compliance program; review electronic health record to gather necessary information used to review proper use of controlled substances.
Working ability to: follow pharmaceutical procedures; carefully prepare medications for patient use, and the ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with staff.
