Department Description: The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy (www.pharmacy.unc.edu) is one of five health science schools (Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, Public Health, Medicine) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is one of the oldest health science academic programs at Chapel Hill. Position Description: The School is currently recruiting for three (3) fixed-term faculty positions dedicated to teaching in the professional Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. Two positions will be based in the School’s Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education (PACE) (https://pharmacy.unc.edu/divisions/pace), and one position will be based in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics (DPET) (https://pharmacy.unc.edu/divisions/dpet/). The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy PACE division invites applications for a 12-month fixed-term, open rank faculty position (with a primary teaching focus) based on our Asheville, North Carolina campus. The primary focus of this Asheville-based position will be dedicated to didactic teaching in the professional PharmD program. The ideal candidate will have training and expertise in delivering pharmacy services in the outpatient, ambulatory care setting and the ability to teach a variety of pharmacotherapy and pharmacy practice topics that span across multiple curricular areas. Specific teaching responsibilities will be driven by both the needs of the School as well as the expertise and interests of the prospective faculty member. In addition to teaching, the faculty member would have additional responsibilities in the areas of scholarship, professional service, and, where applicable, patient care. While the primary focus of the position is in teaching, the effort allocation and focus in each of these other areas would be tailored to the expertise and professional goals of the prospective faculty member.
The School’s PharmD program is a rigorous four-year program. Through the PharmD curriculum, students engage in both didactic coursework and experiential learning. The PharmD curriculum is designed to emphasize active engagement of students in the classroom, foster problem solving and scientific inquiry, and immerse students in patient care early and often throughout their education. Our PharmD graduates are highly successful and work in a wide range of practice environments including pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, government agencies, academia, and other healthcare and business sectors. The Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education (PACE) is dedicated to advancing pharmacy practice and providing clinical education. The Division is comprised of faculty who are experienced educators and practitioners who are committed to transforming the profession through teaching, research, leadership, and service. PACE faculty are committed to advancing the practice of pharmacy and educating students and trainees to utilize, develop, and define best practices in the optimal use of medications to improve patient and population health.
The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy offers a dual campus model with campuses in Chapel Hill and Asheville, North Carolina. The Asheville Campus is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, UNC School of Medicine, UNC Gillings School of Public Health, and UNC Adams School of Dentistry have regional campuses in Asheville that emphasize care for the underserved, place-based learning, and interprofessional education and practice. Our Asheville Campus is home to up to 30 student pharmacists per class, faculty members in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education as well as the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy, and dedicated, student-centered staff members in administration and educational technology. We also partner with the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) to offer PGY2 residency programs in Ambulatory Care and Geriatrics, and with Mission Health to offer PGY2 residencies in Ambulatory Care, Emergency Department, and Administration.
Education Requirements: PharmD degree with a minimum of one-year of PGY1 residency training or relevant patient care experience
Qualifications and Experience:
- PGY2 residency and/or fellowship training - Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification - Direct patient care experience - Involvement in new models of care (payment models, service development, etc) - PharmD student teaching experience including course coordination, didactic instruction, small-group facilitation, experiential teaching and/or precepting - Established or possesses the potential to establish scholarship in a clinical and/or educational area - Training and expertise in an interprofessional pharmacy practice and the ability to teach a variety of pharmacotherapy, leadership and pharmacy practice topics
