The Pharmacy Technician will provide administrative, clerical, and basic clinical support and has specific knowledge of the medication use process within the VHA and is integral to pharmacy operations and clinical services. Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff. Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems. Assignment: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Provides patient education on navigating the VA Pharmacy (including patient management of refills and renewals, important telephone numbers for pharmacy issues, etc.). Triages telephone calls from hospital staff to address a variety of issues, evaluate the problem, and provide an appropriate solution or refer the problem expeditiously to the pharmacist when the problem is beyond the technician's level of knowledge or expertise. Participates in the care coordination and transitions of care process during discharge planning while serving as a liaison between the inpatient pharmacy clinical and operations teams. Communicates to the pharmacist about the patient with complex/high-risk medications inclusive of pre-admission medication list as define by policy. Facilitates or directs appropriate medication related questionnaires to the pharmacist. Interacts effectively with other emergency department health care team on a regular basis. Assists the pharmacist to facilitate pharmaceutical care to the patient within approved scope of practice. Facilitates discharge/transfer for the ED, Acute Care, and CLC patients.
