DESCRIPTION

Moffitt Cancer Center was established and licensed in 1986 as an independent non-profit hospital located in Tampa, FL. Moffitt’s mission is “To contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer” and its vision is “To transform cancer care through service, science and partnership.” With such a mission and vision, Moffitt quickly grew to becoming a nationally ranked cancer center. Currently, it is Florida’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and is at the very forefront of pioneering therapy in oncology.

Education and training remain fundamental to Moffitt’s vision and this is true for the Pharmacy Department at Moffitt as well. In support of this vision, the Moffitt Cancer Center (MCC) Department of Pharmacy offers a PGY-2 Oncology Pharmacy Practice Residency. The PGY-2 Oncology Residency is an ASHP-accredited 12-month program developed to provide the residents all the skills and tools necessary to practice as clinical pharmacist specialists in a wide variety of inter-disciplinary environments. Since our first resident completed training three decades ago, many Moffitt residents have obtained prominent roles in industry, academia, research, clinical and leadership positions across the country. At present, our program has obtained approval and funding for three oncology residency positions.

Our program is divided predominantly into 2- or 4-week blocks that allow residents to focus on patient care in a variety of cancer subtypes. Several inpatient and ambulatory rotations are distributed over the year to allow for a comprehensive learning experience. Our program also allows for tailoring the experience to residents’ interest and learning needs by making several elective blocks available. This allows residents to choose electives such as Personalized Cancer Medicine Service, Immune Cell Therapy (ICE-T), Academia, Senior Adult Clinic etc. Clinical rotations are augmented with disease-specific Oncology Forums, Pharmacy Grand Rounds and Journal clubs. Residents also gain experience in Infusion Center, Investigational Drug Services (IDS) and Central Pharmacy Operations. Taken together, this variety in experiences will prepare the resident to become a successful clinical pharmacist, leader and educator in oncology.

PHILOSOPHY

It is essential for pharmacy graduates to obtain the specialized oncology knowledge base and clinical skills required to become competent in the pharmaceutical care of cancer patients.  Pharmacy residencies serve as one of the best modalities for pharmacy graduates to obtain specialized skills by providing the opportunity to apply and integrate pharmaceutical care principles in the care of cancer patients under the close supervision of a preceptor.  Our residency program is designed to instill a philosophy of practice that embraces the concept of pharmacists being responsible and accountable for pursuing optimal drug therapy outcomes in the provision of oncology pharmaceutical care.

QUALIFICATIONS OF SITE AND PRECEPTORS

The Moffitt Cancer Center was established and licensed in 1986 as an independent non-profit hospital located at and affiliated with the University of South Florida College of Medicine.   MCC obtained NCI Designated Cancer Center status in 1997 and NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center status in March of 2001.  The Department of Pharmacy has established teaching affiliations with the University of South Florida, the University of Florida, Nova Southeastern University, Palm Beach Atlantic University, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Florida A&M University, and several other out of state Colleges of Pharmacy. Moffitt has been at the forefront of many innovative therapies, most recently, including conducting nationwide clinical trials that lead to first approval of CAR-T therapies.

The wide variety of required and elective experiences offered are supported by preceptors who are board certified in oncology (BCOP) and or pharmacotherapy (BCPS). These preceptors have multiple years of training and practice experience in their specialized cancer subtype. Many of the preceptors also have previous post-graduate residency and/or fellowship training. In addition, the residency program is also strongly supported by pharmacy administrative preceptors.

CURRICULUM

Required rotations include, but are not limited to, Inpatient Oncology, Inpatient Hematology, Hematology Clinics, Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Genitourinary Oncology Clinic, Gastrointestinal Oncology Clinic, Breast Oncology Clinic, Infectious Diseases, Thoracic Oncology Clinic, Gynecology Oncology Clinic, Investigational Drug Services, Administration and Infusion Center. Elective rotations may include, but are not limited to, Immune Cell Therapy (including CAR-T) Service, Pain and Palliative Care Service, Personalized Cancer Medicine Service, and a variety of additional Ambulatory Care Clinics.
