UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC) is an 800+ bed academic medical center and is part of UMass Memorial Health Care, the largest health care system in Central Massachusetts. We are the clinical partner of UMass Chan Medical School, with access to the latest technology, research, and clinical trials. The Medical Center consists of three campuses in Worcester, MA: University, Memorial, and Hahnemann Campus.
The pharmacy residency program started in 1995 with one resident. Our programs have since grown to include 4 PGY-1 residents and multiple PGY-2 positions in specialty areas including critical care, cardiology, and medication use safety and policy. Over the years, we have made a significant impact on patient care by becoming an integral part of the medical teams through working directly on the hospital floors and guideline/policy development. We strive for excellence in the training of pharmacy residents, providing a positive and rewarding learning experience. Our programs are committed to training that respects the diversity of our residents and our patient population with an emphasis on professional development and wellness.
The PGY2 Medication Use Safety and Policy Pharmacy Residency Program(1 position) is an ASHP-accredited postgraduate training program that focuses on the development of clinical, analytical, and leadership skills for future leaders in healthcare. The residency offers advanced training in patient safety best practices and emerging technologies with an emphasis on clinical applications and impact on patient care. It is designed to foster knowledge and appreciation for the opportunities in a hospital pharmacy practice setting for patient safety and automation. Residents are paired with a pharmacist mentor to provide professional guidance throughout the year. The resident will gain experience with the implementation and management of National Patient Safety Goals, Joint Commission standards, ADE surveillance, Computerized Prescriber Order Entry (CPOE), smart pump management; controlled access cabinets (Pyxis), point of care barcoding, clinical documentation, and occurrence report review. Throughout the program residents will have teaching opportunities at local colleges of pharmacy.
The PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy Residency Program (1 position) is an ASHP-accredited postgraduate training program that focuses on the development of clinical skills needed to provide safe and effective patient-centered cardiovascular medication therapy management. UMMMC provides a diverse range of cardiology learning experiences with a mixed cardiothoracic surgery/cardiovascular intensive care unit, cardiovascular step-down unit, cardiology acute care unit, cardiovascular catheterization lab, and expanding mechanical circulatory support programs. Over the course of the year, the resident will gain experience in the management of cardiovascular patients, lead and initiate research projects, strengthen their communication skills through formal and informal presentations in a variety of settings, and participate in various interdisciplinary hospital committees. Teaching opportunities are also provided through regional colleges of pharmacy as well as our affiliated medical school.
