The PGY2 Internal Medicine residency program is designed to develop advanced clinical pharmacist capabilities across a broad spectrum of adult inpatient medicine (IM) populations. The resident will be able to serve as a vital member of a multidisciplinary team caring for IM patients.
The resident will complete 10 months of clinical rotations on both private and teaching services. The resident will conduct medication histories, provide drug regimen reviews, therapeutic monitoring of all therapies, and discharge counseling. Required rotations include 4 months of Internal Medicine and 1 month each of Endocrinology and MICU. Elective rotations include Cardiology, Infectious Diseases, Medication Safety, Neurology, Oncology, Psychiatry, SOT, among others. Additionally, the resident will conduct a continuous quality improvement project as well research project to be submitted for publication.
Training among a group of 50 clinical pharmacists (9 IM-focused) and 22 residents, the IM resident will have ample teaching opportunities including providing instruction to doctor of pharmacy students on rotation and mentoring PGY1 residents. The resident will provide an ACPE-accredited CE program and can participate in an optional teaching certificate program through the University of Houston College of Pharmacy.
