Purpose:

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Training Site:

The Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital at The OSUWMC is a 172-bed, comprehensive, cardiovascular center which specializes in the multidisciplinary care of patients with cardiovascular diseases. Each floor is dedicated to a specific service and combines the latest technology with patient–focused care to create the best possible healing environment.

Key Rotations/Experiences:

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has many opportunities for rounding on a cardiology-based service. Most of the services are teaching services and may be composed of an attending cardiologist or cardiovascular intensivist, cardiology/anesthesia/surgery fellow, and house staff including residents, interns, or nurse practitioners. The resident will strengthen his/her clinical acumen and communication skills through completing at least one rotation on each required service: general cardiology, acute coronary syndromes/coronary intensive care, heart failure and heart transplant, cardiovascular intensive care unit, electrophysiology, thoracic transplant. The remaining rotations will be determined based on the resident’s goals and the discretion of the residency program director (RPD).

Teaching:

The PGY2 resident will serve as a preceptor for Doctor of Pharmacy students enrolled at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. During the year, the resident will be part of the teaching staff engaged in the cardiology therapeutics case-based workshops at the College of Pharmacy. This responsibility includes creating quizzes, cases, and exam questions with the supervision of a preceptor. Completion of a teaching certificate is available if decided upon by the resident and RPD. During rotations, the PGY2 resident will have opportunities to co-precept pharmacy students and other pharmacy residents in a layered learning model.

Research:

All residents will undergo focused training in research through a Resident Research Series. Residents are required to participate in a major longitudinal project in cardiology. Utilizing the "flipped" research model, the resident will complete a project initiated by a previous resident and initiate a separate project to be completed by a future resident. The primary project will be presented at a regional conference. The resident will be responsible for all aspects of the research project including project development, IRB proposal, data collection and analysis, presentation of the data, and manuscript preparation.    

Speaking experience:

Effective public speaking skills are emphasized during this residency. The resident is required to complete a minimum of four formal presentations throughout the year to the cardiology clinical pharmacy practitioners. These presentations may include a case-based topic, journal club, pharmacy continuing education, nursing staff development, or a cardiology conference. This requirement is in addition to the research presentation at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference or other conference.

Evaluations:

The Cardiology Resident and Preceptors will fill out evaluations via PharmAcademic at the conclusion of each learning experience. In addition, the Residency Director will fill out quarterly and elective evaluations. All evaluations will be discussed with the resident to determine his/her progression toward the goals of the residency in accordance with ASHP standards. The resident will receive a PGY2 Cardiology Residency Certificate upon completion of these goals determined by the Preceptors, Residency Director and the Senior Director of Pharmacy.
