Description:

The Ambulatory Care PGY2 Residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) is a well rounded experience designed to develop the resident's clinical expertise in ambulatory care and to foster the resident's skills in teaching, research, quality improvement, and protocol development. The goal of the program is to develop an independent pharmacy practitioner who functions as an integral member of the ambulatory care team and is equipped with the skill set to expand/develop ambulatory practices in a variety of settings.  The primary practice sites are within the OSUWMC Health System and include the Ross Heart Hospital, University Hospital East, and ambulatory outreach sites in New Albany, East, Upper Arlington, and Dublin.  Approximately 25,000 patient visits occur each year in the pharmacy outpatient clinics.  The primary care experience is with an external partner Central Ohio Primary Care (COPC) and includes a mix of direct patient care and population health management. Pharmacy clinics operate under collaborative practice agreements, and pharmacy specialists are privileged by the institution, making this an ideal and progressive setting in which to practice ambulatory care.

Duration: 12 months

1 month orientation

10-10.5 practice months in specialized areas with the following breakdown:

            60-70% Direct patient care (core rotations & electives)

            10-20% Teaching

            10% Research

            10% Administrative

0.5-1 month inpatient cardiology (optional)

Practice:

Direct patient care is the backbone of this residency experience. The resident will complete at least one monthly or longitudinal rotation in each of the following areas: Anticoagulation Management Service, Lipid Management/Cardiovascular Risk Reduction, Antiarrhythmic Medication Monitoring, Smoking Cessation, Primary Care at COPC, Pharmacy Administration, and at least 2 of the following subspecialty areas: Hepatitis C Medications, Neurology, Rheumatology, Nephrology, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, or Endocrinology diabetes.  Residents are encouraged to complete an acute care cardiology rotation.  Elective rotations vary in number and depend on length of each.  Electives may include additional subspecialty areas such as Heart Failure, Transitions of Care,  Endocrinology bone health, Infectious Diseases, Medication Assistance, Pre-op Assessment Center, Transplant, or Pain Management.  The program is intended to be flexible and can be modified, at the discretion of the Director, depending on the individual resident's interests and goals.

Teaching:

The resident will participate in the education of PharmD students enrolled at The Ohio State University or PGY1 pharmacy residents, including opportunities in layered learning. The resident will be responsible to lead educational topic discussions with Specialty Practice Pharmacists, PGY1 residents, and/or PharmD students.  Also, during the year the resident may participate in teaching Pharmacy case workshops.  Opportunities exist to earn a formal teaching certificate.

Research:

The resident will be responsible for one major project to be presented at a residency conference in the spring. The resident will be responsible for all aspects of the research project including: IRB construction and submission, data collection and analysis, presentation of data, and manuscript writing.  Other publication opportunities exist throughout the year.

Administrative:

The resident will have the opportunity to develop or expand a clinical service in line with the pharmacy clinics vision and mission.  The resident will gain valuable experience in starting up services not only from a clinical perspective, but operational as well, which is transferrable across practice sites.

Writing:

With the guidance of a mentor, the resident will prepare and submit a manuscript for publication. In addition, at least one abstract based on the resident’s research experience will be submitted for presentation at a national meeting (i.e. ACCP, ASHP, UHC, NLA).

Public Speaking:

In addition to a formal residency conference podium presentation, the resident will complete one lecture for the Resident Education Series and multiple presentations to health care practitioners at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Many other opportunities exist for presentation to interdisciplinary groups including physicians, pharmacists, or nursing colleagues. 

Staffing:

An understanding of the role of pharmacists in an acute care setting is essential. PGY2 residents staff in both distributive and clinical roles throughout the year, with a requirement of approximately 17 weekends/year.
