PGY2 Psychiatric Program Description: The primary purpose of the Psychiatric Specialty Residency is to provide training to become a psychiatric clinical pharmacy specialist. The resident will develop clinical skills in the areas of Integrated Care (IC), Outpatient Mental Health, Inpatient Mental Health, and Substance Use disorders while treating the veteran population.

Residents provide patient care as members of interdisciplinary teams. They assume responsibility for the care of patients and take an active, direct role in patient care. In addition, they write progress notes for patients they assess and are granted prescribing authority under protocol. Residents also have privileges to order laboratory and other diagnostic tests, consult other services when indicated, and develop therapeutic and monitoring plans for patient follow-up.

The program has been accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists since 2009, according to the ASHP Accreditation Standards for PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residencies.

We anticipate recruiting for one of our 3 PGY2 psychiatric pharmacy residency positions through the ASHP match process. We are open to meet with residents with interest in psychiatric pharmacy who are looking for a PGY1 residency as well as PGY2 residency for the 2024-2025 training year.

PGY2 Pain Management and Palliative Care Program Description:

This position has been filled through early commit process for the 2024-2025 residency year. We are open to meet with students with interest in pain who are looking for a PGY1 residency for the 2024-2025 training year.

This residency provides trainees with opportunities to become a proficient pain management and palliative care pharmacy provider. Residents acquire a scope of practice with authority to order medications and tests.  Learning experiences include (but are not limited to) chronic pain clinic, palliative care clinic, inpatient hospice, mental health clinic and addictions clinic.  There is a large component of interprofessional learning as the resident will work with MDs, NPs, PT, OT and RNs. This residency is affiliated with the University of Wisconsin – Madison School of Pharmacy and provides the opportunity to participate in pharmacotherapy labs, present didactic lectures and precept pharmacy students. Residents who successfully complete this residency will possess competencies that qualify them for a pain management pharmacist and/or faculty positions.

Both residencies are ASHP accredited.

Requirements: Applicants must be a graduate of an American Council of Pharmaceutical Education accredited School of Pharmacy with a Pharm.D. degree, must be a U.S. citizen or otherwise eligible to work for the federal government, and participate in a virtual interview.  They must also have completed or currently be enrolled in a PGY-1 residency or an equivalent experience. Applicants must have an aptitude and motivation for mental health or pain management/palliative care patient care. Some of the criteria considered in choosing residents include knowledge of professional practice, communication skills and ability to apply theory to practice, leadership ability, interest in the program, confidence, and maturity.

About William S. Middleton VA

The Madison VA has offered residencies in Ambulatory/Primary Care since 1983 and has trained over 220 residents to date. We currently have 17 residents spread over 6 programs. We offer a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice residency with a focus on Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Practice as well as a PGY-1 General Pharmacy Practice residency. They are designed to train graduates to be excellent clinical practitioners and meets all requirements as set forth by ASHP for first year residency programs. Additionally, we offer PGY-2 programs in Ambulatory Care, Psychiatric Pharmacy, Pain/Palliative Care. Finally, we offer a combined PGY-1/2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency. The PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Specialty Residency is designed to develop leadership skills in addition to further honing of clinical practice skills. Our PGY-1/2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency is designed to provide highly motivated and exceptionally qualified pharmacists with a myriad of experiences in clinical practice and leadership. The PGY-2 in Psychiatric Pharmacy gives residents an opportunity to experience a variety of mental health rotations in both the inpatient and ou...tpatient settings. The PGY-2 in Pain Management and Palliative Care residency provides the opportunity to become an expert in chronic pain and palliative care pharmacy, with an emphasis on mental health learning experiences. Residents wishing to continue with a second year at our institution and those with PGY-1 Residency training from other sites are eligible to be considered for the PGY-2 Residency programs at our site. In addition to pharmacy practice training, pharmacy residents at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital receive Clinical Instructor appointments with the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy and have the opportunity to develop teaching skills by participating in the School of Pharmacy Pharmacotherapy Laboratory. They also have the option to participate in a teaching certificate program offered by the School of Pharmacy. These experiences give residents opportunities to find careers in clinical practice, pharmacy administration, or academia.
