The Medical Center's three-part mission is to improve the lives of Mississippians by educating tomorrow's health care professionals, conducting health sciences research, and providing cutting-edge patient care. A major goal of the Medical Center is the elimination of differences in health status of Mississippians based on race, geography, income, or social status.
Hospitals and Clinics
We have six hospitals, more than 30 clinics, and more than 200 telehealth sites statewide. All of our health care locations also serve as teaching sites in support of our mission to educate the caregivers of tomorrow. Four of our hospitals are located on the UMMC main campus in Jackson, Mississippi.
University Hospital is the flagship hospital of the University of Mississippi Medical Center. It offers a complete range of primary and specialty care and is home to the state's only Level 1 trauma center. The 256-bed facility provides patients with the latest in medical research, technology, and service advancements.
Children’s of Mississippi is the only children’s hospital in Mississippi. Devoted to caring for sick and injured kids, this facility includes the state's only pediatric emergency room, pediatric intensive care unit, level 4 neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric cardiac surgery program and pediatric bone marrow transplant services. In addition to 100 pediatric beds for general and specialty services, Children’s is also equipped to take care of 30 critically ill pediatric patients and up to 100 critically ill neonatal patients.
Winfred L. Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants provides obstetric and gynecologic services. This 266-bed facility also includes Mississippi's only OB/GYN emergency room, Women’s Urgent Care.
Wallace R. Conerly Critical Care Hospital houses 102 beds offering specialized intensive care for medical, cardiac, surgical, and neuroscience patients. The state's only bone marrow transplant unit is located here, providing a comfortable setting for patients' extended stay.
The PGY-2 Critical Care residency is a 12-month ASHP-accredited post-graduate program designed to develop advanced skills necessary to provide confident and competent pharmaceutical care to critically ill patients and to participate in the education of current and future healthcare professionals. Completion of a PGY-1 residency prior to start date is required of all applicants. An interview along with a letter of intent, three letters of recommendation (one must be from PGY-1 RPD and one from a critical care preceptor), college transcripts, and a curriculum vitae.

Integral to its education and research missions, UMMC provides wide-ranging patient care programs. Four specialized hospitals on the Jackson campus include the only children's hospital in Mississippi, a women and infants' hospital, an adult hospital, and a critical care hospital. UMMC offers the only Level 1 trauma center, the only Level 4 neonatal intensive care nursery, and the only organ transplant programs in the state, in ad...dition to many other referral services. University Physicians, the faculty group practice of the School of Medicine, includes about 500 doctors, many of them among leaders in their field, who care for patients in the university hospitals and in clinics on campus, around the Jackson metro area, and in outreach clinics around the state.
With more than 9,100 full- and part-time employees, UMMC is one of the largest employers in Mississippi. The Medical Center's $1.6 billion annual budget - approximately one-tenth from state appropriations - represents 10 percent of the Jackson metro area economy and 2 percent of the state economy. Despite the recent national recession, UMMC continues to grow in all its mission areas.
