This PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Geriatrics is offered by Mountain Area Health Education Center in partnership with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Asheville Campus. This program is led by pharmacists with extensive experience in geriatric pharmacy practice, academics, and leadership.
The goal of the program is to develop geriatric pharmacotherapy specialists with strong teaching and leadership skills who provide exceptional patient care services for older adults, contribute to the body of literature in geriatric pharmacotherapy, and teach multiple disciplines about the needs of the aging population.
The robust curriculum is longitudinal and includes learning experiences in innovative, inter-professional environments including:
Continuing care retirement communities
Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE)
Rural clinics
Long term care
Hospice and palliative care
Memory care clinic
Osteoporosis clinic
Geriatric consult clinic
Geropsychiatry
Primary care
Effective teaching is emphasized, and opportunities exist in layered learning practice environments as well as in a geriatrics elective course for student pharmacists. Residents will participate in monthly academic leadership sessions with other PGY2 residents to hone their active learning expertise.

Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) was established in 1974 to improve training and retention of healthcare professionals across Western North Carolina (WNC).
