General Overview: The PGY-2 Critical Care Residency at Emory University Hospital is an ASHP-accredited, one-year specialty program designed to provide the resident with exposure to diverse populations of critically ill patients. The primary emphasis of the residency is to develop clinicians with expertise in the care of critically ill patients. To achieve this goal, the resident functions as an integral member of the multidisciplinary critical care team to attain practical clinical experience. Through patient data collection and analysis, the resident develops the knowledge and skills to provide patient-specific and evidence-based pharmacotherapy and function as an independent practitioner. In addition, valuable leadership and research skills are developed through participation in a critical care-related interdisciplinary committee and the completion of a clinical research project. Working closely with the Emory Center for Critical Care, the resident gains exposure to a variety of critical care topics, patients, and providers from all disciplines. The resident is encouraged to take advantage of the many professional writing, teaching, and precepting opportunities available during the course of the year. The opportunity to work with two former Presidents of the Society of Critical Care Medicine further enhances the professional network of the resident. These activities provide a solid foundation in critical care pharmacotherapy while enabling the resident to pursue individual interests.
