Job Profile Summary
This position provides a coaching leadership role for the Medical Center’s Medication Quality, PI and Safety Programs through the promotion of safe medication practices and assists in the development of practice standards and policy formation in order to provide superlative patient care. Partners with all areas of the Medical Center to guide standardization, implementation, measurement and improvement of medication use processes that are evidence-based and/or best practices and are compliant with regulatory and accrediting agencies. Serves as a clinical expert to coach and assist in the development of organization quality programs involving medication therapies and collaborates on Quality priorities and initiatives with a focus on improved patient care outcomes. Works with Department of Pharmacy leadership to oversee the reporting of medication events, assuring they are appropriately evaluated, strategies developed and improvements implemented. Work requires knowledge about hands-on medication prescribing, preparation, distribution, administration and monitoring. In addition, work requires excellent presentation, writing and verbal communication skills.
Serves as an internal consultant on medication safety, quality assurance and regulatory compliance issues and projects
Provides Strategic Insight and Coaching on Department Quality Assurance Issues
Provides coaching and guidance on Medication Safety Issues
Provide the medication-use safety perspective to the organization’s design of its technology and automation systems.
Provides medication safety and quality education to the health system
Other administrative and clinical pharmacy duties as assigned
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s in Pharmacy or Pharm.D. Degree required. EXPERIENCE: PGY-1 residency required or equivalent hospital experience (3 years). PGY-2 residency is preferred for specialty areas. LICENSURE: Virginia State Board of Pharmacy License or within 60 days of hire. Basic Life Support or Advanced Cardiac Life Support

The... UVA department of pharmacy has team members who practice in various areas ranging from administration and business services, clinical inpatient care, and ambulatory settings. The inpatient hospital pharmacy provides decentralized dispensing and clinical services to an average daily census of over 600 patients. Sterile compounding for patients occurs in a newly renovated state-of-the-art IV clean room. The department operates numerous pharmacist-run outpatient clinics, several outpatient dispensing pharmacies, a specialty pharmacy, mail order, and home infusion services. The entire department has extensive technology and automation to provide innovative and safe care. Recent outpatient pharmacy, outpatient surgical services with associated pre and post-op clinical pharmacy care, and community hospital expansion has allowed UVA to provide pharmacy services to an increased number of patients throughout the state.
In addition, the department has greater than 90 pharmacy student and resident preceptors serving our 12 ASHP-accredited residency programs as well as introductory and advanced experiential education of pharmacy students from Virginia Schools of Pharmacy.
