A PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency builds upon PGY1 residency graduates’ competence in the delivery of patient-centered care and in pharmacy operational services to prepare residents who can assume high level managerial, supervisory and leadership responsibilities. Areas of competence emphasized during the program include safe and effective medication-use systems, quality assurance and improvement, the management of human resources, the management of financial resources, use of technology, and advanced leadership. The residency lays the foundation for continued growth in management and leadership skills. Upon graduation, residents are prepared for a clinical or operational management/supervisory role in a variety of work settings.
The HSPAL Residency at Eskenazi Health is a 24-month post-Doctor of Pharmacy training program that meets requirements for both a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency and a PGY2 HSPAL Residency. Eskenazi Health is proud to partner with the University of North Carolina (UNC) Eshelman School of Pharmacy to supplement on-site residency training with a world-class didactic education. HSPAL residents will participate as a cohort with other leading health-systems to complete the Master of Science Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a specialization in Health-System Pharmacy Administration.
During the PGY1 year, residents will be part of the Eskenazi Health PGY1 Pharmacy Residency cohort, supplemented with the Master of Science degree, developing a solid foundation in clinical care.
In the second year of the program, HSPAL residents will build upon the PGY1 experience, working closely with the leaders within the Department of Pharmacy and hospital administrators to develop competence in clinical leadership, pharmacy operations, personnel management, budgeting and finance, medication safety, drug use policy, process improvement, and informatics. Second-year electives are customizable to each resident's interests and career goals. Residents completing the HSPAL Residency will gain an understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities of a safety net health-system, and will be prepared to assume supervisory and manager-level positions in a fully-integrated health-system.
