DIRECTOR OF PHARMACY | PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA
The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for the optimization of acute care pharmacy operations and clinical services within their department. The director will help to ensure pharmaceutical care is delivered according to federal and state regulations, hospital and department policies and universally accepted practices and procedures. This oversight may extend into retail, infusion services, and other non-acute ambulatory pharmacy services. The Director is responsible for managing and leading pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other support staff who provide patient care or supportive services for respective areas of oversight. This may include managing a department or staff in a virtual environment. The Director partners with nursing, medical, and administration leaders to optimize patient care through clinical pharmacy services and ensures appropriate drug storage and preparation. Finally, the leader will lead and manage pharmacy patient care services and operations, medication use outcomes and stewardship, planning and project management, human resource management, scholarship, and community service in associated areas of responsibility. All responsibilities are accomplished in collaboration with the system-level pharmacy leadership team and local hospital leadership team.
Essential Job Functions
Provides strategic planning, management, and oversight of all pharmacy related activities within the hospital system and supportive of system-level initiatives involving change and support for pharmaceutical care across the hospital.
Develops and supports initiatives to manage pharmacy operating budget and a reduction of pharmacy supply cost through promoting and implementing cost containment strategies that benefit the Ministry.
Promotes and enhances pharmacy care by providing leadership and support to patient care and quality initiatives in acute and non-acute areas (clinical activities, Meds-to-Beds, dosing services).
Selects, trains, orients, and assigns department staff (either directly or through subordinate supervisors).
Develops standards of performance, evaluates performance, and initiates recommendations for personnel actions.
Assesses and standardizes medication dispensing practices and pharmacy workflows, develop department goals and objectives, and encourages team member growth and development
Develops and establishes operation procedures consistent with accrediting bodies, as well as state and federal rules overseeing pharmacy practice.
Establishes policies to ensure adequate execution; appraises and evaluates subordinate and system performance regularly.
Responsible for helping hospital site adhere to local sites in collaborating with IT and supply chain across BSMH to support safe, standard, and effective medication usage and practices.
Collaborates and works with hospital and medical staff committee meetings as required.

REQUIRED
Pharmacist Licensure – State Board of Pharmacy
Bachelor's of Science in Pharmacy or PharmD
3 years of progressive hospital or healthcare system pharmacy leadership
PREFERRED
Master's in Business or Healthcare Administration
Pharmacy Residency or Fellowship
