This 12-month, ASHP-accredited, PGY2 infectious diseases pharmacy residency program at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is designed to provide the resident an opportunity to advance their clinical knowledge and judgement beyond that of a PGY1 resident in the area of infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship. The residency program is designed to help equip the resident with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to be an adept, independent, clinical pharmacy specialist practitioner/educator in the area of infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship. The program aims to accomplish this goal through comprehensive core training, collaboration with other healthcare providers, appropriately close mentorship with earned independence, and exposure to collaborative and independent teaching opportunities. Upon completion of the residency, the graduating resident will be prepared to provide comprehensive infectious diseases pharmaceutical care and be able to successfully serve healthcare organizations as a resource for information on antimicrobials, for decision-making affecting the care of patients with infections, for leadership in formulary decision-making for antimicrobials, and for education and training of others, including patients, the public, trainees, and healthcare professionals.

Required residency rotations include: orientation, microbiology lab, general infectious diseases 1, general infectious diseases 2, transplant infectious diseases 1, transplant infectious diseases 2, BJH (local) antimicrobial stewardship, BJC (system) antimicrobial stewardship, HIV/infectious diseases clinic. Elective opportunities exist in pediatric infectious diseases and community infectious diseases. Other elective learning experiences may be developed based on resident interest and preceptor availability.

Requirements for application include: 1) Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited school of pharmacy (or one in the process of pursuing accreditation) or Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP); 2) Successful completion of an ASHP-accredited or candidate status PGY1 residency prior to start of PGY2 residency; 3) Eligible for pharmacist licensure in Missouri with Medication Therapy Services (MTS) certification; 4)Completed PhORCAS application, including: Letter of intent, Curriculum vitae (CV), Official pharmacy school transcripts, Three standardized reference forms, with at least two being from PGY1 rotation preceptors.
