Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Heart Center is comprised of 32 Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) beds, one of the largest dedicated CICUs in the U.S. a fully equipped 35 bed Cardiac Acute Care Unit (CACU), and 20+ outpatient cardiology clinics across Georgia. The Heart Center treats more than 48,000 children yearly comprising of greater than 800 cardiothoracic surgery cases and 20 heart transplants each year.
Cardiac Intensive Care Pharmacy Specialist work closely with all aspects of patient care including providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care for patients admitted to the CICU and CACU. Daily rounds in a multi-disciplinary approach in both the CICU and CACU are completed Monday through Friday. This position includes involvement in daily assessment, discussion, and decisions which directly impact patient care.
The CICU and CACU pharmacists are involved in several subcommittees within the Heart Center including Single Ventricle, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Analgosedation, and Neurodevelopmental groups. In addition, the pharmacist is engaged in guideline/protocol development and implementation for the Heart Center including anticoagulation, analgosedation, necrotizing enterocolitis, and antimicrobial sepsis rule-out.
Research is fostered within the Heart Center and a major part of the pharmacist role. There are numerous research and quality improvement projects available to join or initiate with physicians, APPs, and pharmacy resident involvement. As we are members of a large, tertiary academic center, the Heart Center pharmacists actively participate in education by providing talks for continuing fellow education, onboarding of new APPs and nurses, pharmacy residents and student education.
Doctor of Pharmacy from accredited pharmacy school with one or two ASHP accredited residencies completed, or extensive experience in pediatric cardiology.
