Oversee the daily activities of all inpatient pharmacy staff to ensure provision of safe, effective, clinically appropriate, patient focused, and economically reasonable medication use to all patients under our direct care. In conjunction with the Pharmacy Director, develop departmental goals and strategies that support the Mission, Vision, and Values of the organization, the department, and pharmacy professions best/evidence based practices. Work with the Inpatient Clinical Manager and Director to develop an annual budget and monitoring to ensure that clinical utilization of medications and formulary management, as well as inpatient staffing, support the financial goals of the organization. Ensure that inpatient staff development, process improvement, and customer service is focused on creating a culture of patient and staff satisfaction.
Essential Job Duties:
Coordinates daily activities and scheduling of inpatient pharmacy staff consistent with workload requirements and available personnel. Oversees creation of standard work/policies/procedures, based on the workload requirements, to ensure efficient, timely, and high quality dispensing of medications for patients.
Supervises inpatient pharmacists, technicians, and support staff; interviews and selects, provides orientation and continued training, coaches, counsels, disciplines, conducts performance review and disciplines and/or discharges consistent with hospital personnel policies and procedures and in conjunction with Pharmacy Director. Seeks out opportunities to develop/improve skills of employees on a regular basis with a focus on patient care and medication safety.
Supports activities and relationships with higher education institutions to provide training for pharmacist and pharmacy technician students.
Organizes and supervises the daily operational duties in the dispensing areas to assure the accurate and timely delivery of medications, in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
Conducts regular inpatient staff meetings to update, instruct, and support employees. Participates on hospital committees including, but not limited to, the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, and functions as a liaison between other organizational departments and the pharmacy to support patient care and safe medication use.
Assists the Director in identifying, evaluating, implementing, and monitoring technology that supports efficiency, inventory management, and medication safety. Works with the Director to ensure communication of department improvements, activities, and metrics, which improve patient care and/or support the hospital's strategic goals, to the executive team.
Maintains accurate records as required by departmental policies and procedures and/or government and state board regulations. Ensures that all work is accomplished in compliance with State and Federal laws as well as other regulatory entities such as The Joint Commission.
Reviews written medication orders and prescriptions to assure safe, effective use of medications; determines ingredients, strength and dosage required. Reviews the medication selected for appropriateness relative to potential allergies, toxicity, and adverse drug reactions with other medications ordered. Communicates with the physician, as necessary, to clarify orders and/or make recommendations concerning alternate therapy.
Prepares or supervises the high quality preparation of inpatient prescription and compounded medications according to established procedures and professional standards, including use of aseptic technique in preparation of sterile medications within regulatory guidelines (e.g. USP 797). Maintains a working understanding of all inpatient technician and pharmacists’ activities involved in the distribution of medications.
Promotes and provides drug information to patients, physicians, nurses, and other caregivers where appropriate and upon request.
Educational/Experience Requirements:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy or PharmD with experience. Five years as a Hospital Pharmacist, demonstrated proficiency in all aspects of medication processing, storage, delivery and inventory control required.
Supervisory experience, including interviewing and training skills, preferred.
