AdventHealth East Orlando (AHEO) is a full-service, community hospital and an innovative and respected local leader — filling a vital need in a fast-growing area. AHEO is a 295-bed academic community teaching hospital which is home to the busiest emergency department in all of Orlando. AHEO provides care for more than 12,000 inpatients and 119,000 emergency department (ED) patients annually and hosts medical residents in the ED and family medicine programs. It is also a clinical teaching site for several colleges of pharmacy, medicine and nursing and is home to a well-established PGY1 Pharmacy Residency which offers the PGY2 resident the opportunity for both mentorship and leadership.
PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification.
AdventHealth East Orlando’s PGY2 ambulatory care pharmacy residency is an ASHP accredited program established in 2018. It provides advanced training concentrated on the care of patients within a hospital-based, outpatient, pharmacy-led service as well as in the primary care and population health settings. Resident experiences focus on chronic disease state management including but not limited to anticoagulation, heart failure, COPD, diabetes, and hypertension, as well as the opportunity to work with other health care providers within primary care collaborations and population health teams to offer an interdisciplinary approach to patient care. Additionally, the resident will conduct independent research and precept PGY1 pharmacy residents and 4th-year pharmacy students through a layered-learning model. The resident is given the opportunity to grow leadership skills through chief resident responsibilities, development of policies/procedures, as well as participation in quality improvement initiatives. With over 15 years of experience in the ambulatory care field, the preceptors of the program are 100% board-certified and residency-trained specialists, dedicated to the growth and development of future ambulatory care pharmacists. Graduates will be prepared to assume ambulatory care positions as clinical specialists in areas such as chronic care management, primary care and population health or as assistant professors at a college of pharmacy. Additionally, graduates will be well-equipped to sit for the board certification exam in ambulatory care.
