Geisinger is recruiting for the first of its kind 2-year pharmacy residency in cannabis practice, policy, and administration. The residency is aimed at educating and training pharmacists imparting evidenced-based care to patients with a multitude of serious medical conditions identified to potentially benefit from medical cannabis use. Experiences consist of direct patient care and credentialing as well as appropriate use, advocacy, and policy development for cannabis within a health system. The goal of this residency is to develop a cohort of pharmacists with the knowledge, skill, and tools to work in health systems as experts in the safe, effective, and evidenced based use of cannabis.
In the first year of this two-year program, residents will spend their time in the clinical care of patients in Geisinger primary care and specialty clinics. Geisinger has pharmacists embedded in specialty clinics across the system including gastroenterology, rheumatology, pain, behavioral health, hepatology, and neurology working with their physician colleagues under a collaborative practice agreement. The goal of this year is to provide a firm foundation for the resident in the serious medical conditions where cannabis is most often approved for use. Formulation of practice advancement opportunities will also be included in year one.
In the second year, the resident will remain involved in clinical care, but shift primary focus to policy, administrative, and investigative roles, working across the health system to identify opportunities for better cannabis management as part of comprehensive medication management, advocate for the research of cannabis for the management of chronic conditions, and guide the system in making informed and evidence-based decisions about cannabis use and management.
Support for this unique program is provided by our Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Academic Clinical Research Center under the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and the Geisinger College of Health Sciences. Additional opportunities to collaborate with other researchers and clinicians under this Center will be expected and part of the overall two-year experience.
