The post-graduate year two (PGY2) Cardiology Pharmacy Residency Program at Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center is a one year post-graduate training program designed to provide residents with the necessary experiences to develop proficiency in the medication management of patients with all types of cardiovascular diseases. The program is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacy (ASHP).  

Purpose Statement: The PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification. 

Residents of this program will be exposed to patients with many surgical and non-surgical cardiovascular disease states including acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, arrhythmias, valvular heart diseases, aortic aneurysms/dissections among many others and will become versed in the medication therapies to support procedure-based interventions to treat these disease states including both cardiac surgery and catheter-based interventions.  Additional activities the resident will engage in will involve provision of education to health care providers, patients and the public through presentations, journal clubs and informal teaching opportunities.  The resident will also engage in the processes involved with conducting a major project, either research or quality improvement focused and will be expected to compose manuscripts to contribute to the medical literature and summarize project results. The goal of this program is to build the knowledge base of residents in cardiovascular medication therapies, develop the resident's abilities to participate in medical emergency situations, refine skills conducting quality improvement or research projects relevant to patients with cardiovascular diseases, develop the resident's teaching and precepting skills, ultimately developing the resident into a cardiovascular medication expert who will be considered a competitive candidate for a position as a cardiovascular clinical pharmacy specialist or a clinical faculty member at a college of pharmacy.

  • Outstanding residency candidate with strong critical thinking ability, time management skills, and integrity who is self-motivated with a relentless desire for professional accomplishment.
  • Graduated from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy with a Pharm.D. degree.
  • Completed an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency.
  • Licensed as a pharmacist in Texas within 90 days of the start of the residency year.
  • Registered with PhORCAS and the ASHP Residency Matching Program.
