The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy’s Division of Pharmacotherapy and Translational Sciences, located in San Antonio, TX, is dedicated to training and educating pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists to provide specialty pharmacotherapeutic services and to conduct translational, transdisciplinary, and other types of innovative research. Our faculty pursue clinical and translational research to help solve some of today's greatest pharmacotherapeutic challenges, with research expertise in infectious diseases, cancer, immunology, aging, metagenomics, substance use disorder, and various acute and primary care clinical specialties. To this end, the Division offers three graduate programs:

Master of Science/Pharmacotherapy & Translational Sciences Residency Program

The mission of the MS graduate program in Pharmacotherapy & Translational Sciences is to produce an individual educated and trained to provide advanced practice pharmaceutical care at a level commensurate with Board Certification.  Moreover, the graduate will be prepared to successfully assume roles as a collaborator and investigator capable of developing research strategies that bring science to practice. The capability of graduates to engage in the discovery, dissemination, and application of pharmaceutical and biomedical knowledge to improve the health status of society will distinguish our graduates from individuals completing traditional residency programs. Graduates most often pursue careers in academia, research, or pharmaceutical industry. This program is designed to be a 2-year program with a minimum of 42 credit hours needed for the degree. This degree is most often combined with a concurrent advanced pharmacy residency (non-accredited) under the direction of a selected Division clinical preceptor. While residents may pursue advanced training in many specialty areas, specific expertise from Division faculty include Ambulatory Care, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics.

Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD Program

The Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD Program is a research degree program designed to prepare students to discover, integrate, and apply knowledge as well as to communicate and disseminate it. The student pursuing this degree program is expected to develop the ability to understand and to evaluate the literature of his or her field and to apply appropriate principles and procedures to the recognition, evaluation, interpretation, and understanding of issues at the frontiers of knowledge. The graduate will be able to independently engage in the discovery, dissemination, and application of pharmaceutical and biomedical knowledge to improve the health status of society. Specific areas of research for this program include infectious diseases, cancer, immunology, aging, metagenomics, and substance use disorder.

Translational Sciences PhD Program

The Translational Sciences PhD Program is a multidisciplinary, inter-institutional degree program, that leverages the strengths of four universities in The University of Texas System. Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, and other health professionals receive advanced clinical and translational research training in an interprofessional environment. The Translational Sciences PhD Program provides an in-depth, rigorous, and individualized research education and training program that will prepare clinician-scientists to integrate information from multiple domains and conduct independent and team-oriented research to improve human and global health. Faculty from numerous areas of expertise may serve as research supervisors. Within the Pharmacotherapy & Translational Sciences Division, specific areas of research for this program include infectious diseases, cancer, immunology, aging, metagenomics, and substance use disorder.

All three graduate programs are located at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio in San Antonio, TX.

Requirements include:

• Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited school or college of pharmacy or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) certificate
• Texas licensure by August 1 for those pursuing a MS/residency
