The clinical specialist pharmacist serves as a subject matter expert in pediatric emergency medicine, providing advanced medication management and expert consultation in a fast-paced, high-acuity pediatric Emergency Department (ED). This position serves as a pharmacotherapy consultant, patient advocate, and educator to ensure safe, effective, and evidence-based medication use.
Key responsibilities
Work collaboratively with the ED healthcare team to develop and optimize patient medication therapy
Participate in bedside response for all patients needing immediate intervention including critically ill patients, patients with high risk for sepsis, behavioral emergencies, seizures, and more
Develop and manage pharmacotherapeutic protocols, order sets, and guidelines
Mentor and precept pharmacy residents, students, and staff
Provide knowledge of pharmacotherapy practices for pediatric emergency medicine including medication indication, dose, adverse effects, and monitoring to physicians, nurses, and patients/families
Participate in antimicrobial stewardship, including culture review and follow-up
Contribute to hospital committees, quality improvement initiatives, and research
Qualifications
Required
Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited school of pharmacy
Pharmacy licensure in the state of Texas
Completion of PGY1 ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency or equivalent experience (3 years of hospital experience)
Meets preceptor requirements to precept PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residents as defined by ASHP
Board of Pharmacy Specialties Certification in specialty area required within 2 years
20-hour ACPE accredited IV sterile compounding training course required within 90 days

Completion of PGY2 ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency in pediatrics, critical care, or emergency medicine
The pharmacist is responsible for providing comprehensive medication management in a fast-paced, high-acuity emergency department (ED). As a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, the clinical pharmacist promotes an environment of safe and effective medication utilization while providing services to meet the needs of the patient. This will be a full-time, overnight position in the emergency department that follows a 7 on 7 off schedule pattern.
Key responsibilities
Work collaboratively with the ED healthcare team to develop and optimize patient medication therapy
Review orders for appropriateness and complete final verification
Participate in bedside response for all patients needing immediate intervention including critically ill patients, patients with high risk for sepsis, behavioral emergencies, seizures, and more
Participate in discharge education to patients and their families for medications such as Epi-pens
Complete medication histories and document interventions
Provide knowledge of pharmacotherapy practices for pediatric emergency medicine including medication indication, dose, adverse effects, and monitoring to physicians, nurses, and patients/families
Contributes to education of pharmacists, pharmacy residents, nurses, and providers

Qualifications
Required
Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited school of pharmacy
Pharmacy licensure in the state of Texas
One year of hospital experience

Preferred
Completion of PGY1 ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency or equivalent experience (3 years of hospital experience)
Pediatric-focused PGY1 or pediatric hospital experience preferred
