PGY-1/PGY-2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership with Masters
Pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY-2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY-2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.
The Pharmacy Residency Program is a 24-month program, resulting in an MS degree in Pharmacy Leadership & Administration from University of Houston, as well as a Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) and Post-Graduate Year 2 (PGY2) certificate, upon successful completion.
Licensure: Applicants to the Harris Health System Pharmacy Residency Programs shall have either obtained a license to practice pharmacy in Texas, have reciprocated their license to practice pharmacy in Texas, or be in the process of obtaining their license to practice pharmacy in Texas as soon as possible.
Resident interns and resident pharmacists shall submit documentation of active licensure in the state of Texas [North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE)] to the Residency Program Director as soon as it is available and no later than July 31st.
Per ASHP requirements, a minimum of 2/3 of the residency must be completed as a licensed pharmacist, therefore resident interns/pharmacists who have failed to meet the licensure deadline due to failure of either the NAPLEX or Texas MPJE exam shall be dismissed from the residency program.
Residents are strongly encouraged to obtain licensure in the State of Texas before they begin the residency program. Residents must keep the RPD informed of examination attempts, results, and licensure timeline.
First examination attempt must be within 30 days of the start of the program.
If licensure is not obtained within the first 60 days, the resident and RPD will bring a proposed plan for completion to the RAC for approval, and RAC may extend the deadline by up to an additional 60 days.
If time does not allow the resident to re-take the exam and be licensed by 120 days per ASHP requirement, the resident shall be dismissed from the residency program.
