Purpose

The purpose of the PGY-2 Critical Care and Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency programs at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC) is to develop and refine clinical, leadership, management, and teaching skills. Upon completion of the PGY-2 program, the resident will be able to enter practice as a highly competent and effective clinical specialist or adjunct/associate faculty member in a wide range of practice settings.

PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency

Core clinical rotations include Medical Intensive Care, Cardiology, Heart and Vascular Surgery, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care, Neuro Critical Care, and Emergency Medicine. Elective opportunities include Toxicology, Medical Oncology Intensive Care, and Infectious Disease consult service. As Penn Medicine’s Level One Trauma Center, the pharmacy residency program incorporates a longitudinal trauma bay on-call program. Additional longitudinal experiences include a residency research project, medication use evaluation, critical care and medication safety committee involvement, clinical on-call, staffing responsibilities (every 3rd weekend), and various presentation requirements. The resident will have the opportunity to precept PGY1 residents and APPE students on clinical rotations and complete a lecture for a local College of Pharmacy's critical care elective class.

PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency

Core clinical experiences include five Adult Emergency Medicine experiences (foundational, core, trauma, medical emergencies, preceptorship) completed in the PPMC Emergency Department.  Additional core experiences include Medical Intensive Care, Toxicology at the Philadelphia Poison Control Center, and Emergency Medicine - Special Populations (Oncology and Transplant) completed in the ED at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  Elective experiences are available in Addiction Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, and Critical Care.   Longitudinal experiences include hospital emergency response (in house code and trauma coverage), clinical on call, staffing responsibilities (every 3rd weekend), research, interdisciplinary education, and Emergency Medicine committee work. 

Requirements:

Doctorate of Pharmacy, completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Residency program or equivalent clinical experience, eligibility for Pennsylvania pharmacy licensure, academic transcripts, curriculum vitae, three completed recommendation forms, and letter of intent.
