Program Overview

The Novant Health Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency Program is a two-year, ASHP-accredited program designed to develop future pharmacy leaders equipped to excel in a variety of leadership roles — including clinical management, operations, executive leadership, and pharmacy administration.

This program is offered in partnership with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, where residents earn a Master of Science (MS) in Health-System Pharmacy Administration while completing residency training.

Program Structure

• Year 1 (PGY1): Foundational clinical training completed within a Novant Health PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program (see our website for individual PGY1 program details)

• Year 2 (PGY2): Focused administrative and leadership rotations with emphasis on:

  • Clinical and operational leadership

  • Supply chain and medication use systems

  • Pharmacy finance and business operations

  • Medication safety, quality, and regulatory compliance

Longitudinal Experiences

Throughout both years, residents participate in longitudinal activities that strengthen leadership and professional development skills, including:

• Leadership and human resources management

• Centralized pharmacy staffing

• Leader-on-call experience

• Delivery of an ACPE-accredited continuing education presentation

• Completion of a quality improvement or research project

Requirements

Pharm.D., North Carolina License (or pending). Applications are accepted via PhORCAS and the deadline is January 2. Required with your application: letter of intent, curriculum vitae, 3 letters of reference utilizing the PhORCAS reference document, and pharmacy school transcript.
