The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center PGY2 Emergency Medicine Residency

Purpose: 

PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) 
education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with 
knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and 
objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 
residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, 
and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

Patient Care Experience: 

Patient care is the foundation of this residency experience. The primary practice site is The Abercrombie and Fitch Emergency Department (ED) at The OSUWMC. The ED is a designated Level 1 Trauma Center, as well as a Comprehensive Stroke, Burn, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Center and Cardiac Center with over 80,000 visits annually and an admission rate >40%. The ED includes over 100 beds: nine Level 1 Trauma-Critical Care beds, a 20 bed Observation Unit, a 15 bed Cancer ED hematology/oncology pod, and an Arrival Zone for minor illness or injury treatment. The required rotations include Orientation (4 weeks), Introduction to Triage in Emergency Medicine (4 weeks), Intermediate Triage in Emergency Medicine (4 weeks), Advanced Triage in Emergency Medicine (4-5 weeks), Observation Medicine (2 weeks), Psychiatry (2 weeks), Hematology/Oncology in Emergency Medicine (3 weeks), Emergency Medicine IPPE Clinical Precepting (2 weeks), Advanced Emergency Medicine (4-5 weeks), and Pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (4 weeks). Elective learning experiences include but are not limited to Surgical ICU, Medical ICU, Cardiology, Neuro ICU, Nocturnal Emergency Medicine, Central Ohio Poison Control, Community Emergency Medicine at OSU East Hospital, Emergency Preparedness, Addiction Medicine, and Clinical Precepting in Emergency Medicine 

Research Experience:

The PGY2 resident will experience mentorship from clinicians with research experience. A primary preceptor will guide the resident to generate a research question and carry out the major research project along with a statistician and EM faculty member. The resident will be expected to present their research project and prepare a manuscript suitable for publication. 

Teaching Experience:

The PGY2 EM resident will help precept Doctor of Pharmacy students enrolled at the The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, as well as PGY1 residents, and Advanced Topics In Emergency Medicine (ATEM 4th year Medical Students) at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. The resident will also have the opportunity for didactic and small group discussions at the College of Pharmacy, or education for nursing, EM physician residents, or pre-hospital providers.

Staffing Experience:

Staffing responsibilities include 19 total weekends. Weekend staffing includes clinical weekends in the ED, staffing in UH central pharmacy, and the Ross Heart Hospital Satellite Pharmacy.

Interview Process:

During the on-site and/or virtual interview, the candidate will meet with the Residency Program Director, ED preceptors, current PGY2 EM residents, and EM physician/nursing leadership. Additionally, the candidate will give a 5-minute pearl presentation on a topic of their choice.
