PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Program

This program will be physically present at the ASHP Midyear Residency Showcase and PPS.

The PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency is designed to provide a strong clinical foundation and help the resident further develop expertise in research, teaching, leadership, and writing skills. Clinical rotations are longitudinal in nature and include core and elective experiences that focus on direct patient care in the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and specialty clinics. Each resident is offered the opportunity to customize their elective rotations to their clinical interest(s), selecting from opportunities in chronic kidney disease, adult and pediatric cystic fibrosis, hematology/oncology, hypertension, infectious disease stewardship, oral chemotherapy, palliative care, pharmacogenetics, solid organ transplant, specialty pharmacy, transitions of care – geriatrics, and transitions of care – heart failure/cardiology. A multitude of teaching opportunities are available to the resident, who will receive a faculty appointment as an Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. Upon graduation from our PGY2 program, the resident will be an ideal candidate for a clinical faculty or clinical pharmacist specialist position and will be prepared to be a leader in ambulatory care practice.   

Learning experiences are tailored according to resident interests in conjunction with the residency program director.

Pharmacists serve as experts in drug therapy and dosing. Pharmacists perform functions like making sure chemotherapy orders are correct and properly dosed, helping patients and physicians with anticoagulation dosing, and dosing for drugs such as antibiotics an...d anticonvulsants. The pharmacy also provides outpatient locations for patients to fill prescriptions. Because of the specialized care that UMH provides, often other community-based pharmacies are not equipped to handle some of the complicated prescriptions that patients receive.
