The combined PGY1 Pharmacy/PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics residency program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education to develop pharmacist practitioners with progressive knowledge, skills, and abilities across both general and specialized practice areas.
The two-year program integrates foundational clinical training with advanced informatics competencies, preparing residents to manage and optimize the medication-use process through the application of informatics principles, standards, and best practices.
The PGY1 year focuses on developing core clinical and operational pharmacy skills, while the PGY2 year emphasizes informatics specialization, including clinical decision support, automation and technology, interdisciplinary collaboration, and data analytics.
Residents will gain hands-on experience with health information systems such as Epic Willow Ambulatory (WAM), Beacon, Willow, Compass Rose and order transmittal. They also participate in longitudinal projects, staffing, and leadership development.
The PGY1/PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics Residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) is a hospital-based, 24-month program designed to cultivate informatics champions capable of driving innovation and safety in the medication use system. Upon completion, residents will be well-prepared for informatics-focused roles in health systems, vendor organizations, or academia, and eligible for board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.
Residents completing the PGY1/PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics Residency are eligible to receive a PGY1 Pharmacy Certificate and a PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics Certificate. This program is ASHP accredited.
Purpose:
The combined PGY1 Pharmacy/PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics residency program is designed to produce well-rounded, clinically competent pharmacists with specialized expertise in pharmacy informatics.
The program builds upon the clinical foundation established during the PGY1 year, including general competencies for managing medication-use processes, and advances toward mastery in informatics during the PGY2 year.
Graduates will be adept in the language and concepts of information technology, enabling them to function effectively in interprofessional environments. They will be equipped to lead informatics initiatives, implement and optimize health information systems, and contribute to strategic decision-making across the healthcare enterprise.
Staffing:
The staffing commitment is 24 weekends for PGY1 (scheduled as (approximately) every other weekend) and 19 weekends for PGY2 as a licensed pharmacist in the state of Ohio. Residents will be asked to participate in operational staffing as well as on-call service. Each year residents are required to work during 1 major holiday and 2 minor holidays.
