The ECU Health Medical Center PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency offers rotations in a variety of settings including General Pediatrics, Pediatric Intensive Care (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU), pediatric hematology-oncology, pediatric emergency medicine, pediatric infectious disease, and nutrition support. ECU Health Medical Center is a large academic medical center located in Greenville, North Carolina and is part of a regional health system of 9 hospitals. Maynard Children’s Hospital at ECU Health Medical Center is a 197-bed children’s hospital with level 1 pediatric trauma designation, which includes a 16-bed pediatric intensive care unit and a 71-bed, multi-level neonatal intensive care unit. Pharmacists provide clinical services in every unit of the Children’s Hospital, in addition to providing operational services from a pediatric satellite pharmacy. The PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy resident will gain experience taking care of pediatric patients by rounding with the interdisciplinary teams in the various inpatient service areas and providing clinical pharmacy services in collaboration with pediatric clinical pharmacists and providers. Responsibilities of the resident will include optimization of patients’ medication therapies through clinical interventions, therapeutic drug monitoring, and responding to pediatric code blue events. The resident will also serve as members on a variety of institutional committees including Children’s Hospital Quality Group, Sea of Safety, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and Children’s P&T. In addition, the program offers teaching opportunities with pharmacy students from Campbell University and the University of North Carolina, neonatology fellows, medical/surgical residents, PGY1 pharmacy residents, nurses, and allied health professionals.
The program follows the accreditation standards set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and is in pre-candidate status. It provides in-depth training on core practice concepts in pediatric pharmacy and broad exposure to a variety of pediatric practice settings. The ASHP required competency areas, goals, and objectives document also provides a list of key disease states and topics that will be covered during this Pediatric PGY2 residency.
Applicants must be graduates of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy and have successfully completed an ASHP accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program (or one with candidate status). Applicants must also be eligible for licensure in North Carolina and residents must be licensed in North Carolina prior to the start date.
